I was drawn this great read in a used bookstore after reading the title and Gordon McDonald's forward. Hudson is a South African pastor who writes with warmth and contemplation that causes you to pause often to ponder his words.
Ten signposts are offered, each signify a spiritual dynamic that directs our discipleship journey. The intriguing chapter headings provide insight on the author's approach. "Drawing a Picture of God" (i.e., assessing our perspective on God as relates to our spirituality), "Developing a Christian Memory", "Becoming Holy, Becoming Ourselves"... These evocative images draw the reader into an exploration of God's presence in mundane living.
What touched me the most in this book was the reverence that exuded in each chapter. The signposts become reasons to celebrate the beautiful life that God has called us to embrace. Ample practical models illustrate how we can love our enemies, find God in all things and perceive ourselves as part of God's family. These applications are notably simplistic, leaving you hopeful for the future.
Each chapter has penetrating questions that can be used either personally or in group discussion. Again, the intersect between spiritual fervor and practical living is deeply refreshing. When I finally laid this book down I took a moment, glanced at the beautiful nature that surrounded me and expressed gratitude to God for how one fellow sojourner's words could speak so persuasively into my own faith walk.
