കഥാകൃത്ത്, നോവലിസ്റ്റ്, തിരക്കഥാകൃത്ത്, ചലച്ചിത്ര സംവിധായകന്‍. 1933 ജൂലൈ 15-ന് പൊന്നാനിക്കടുത്ത് കൂടല്ലൂരില്‍ ജനിച്ചു. അദ്ധ്യാപകനായിരുന്നു. മാതൃഭൂമി ആഴ്ചപ്പതിപ്പിന്റെ സഹപത്രാധിപര്‍, പിന്നീട് പത്രാധിപര്‍ (1956-'81). മാതൃഭൂമി പീരിയോഡിക്കല്‍സ് എഡിറ്റര്‍ (1988-'99). കേന്ദ്ര സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാര്‍ഡ് (കാലം), കേരള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാര്‍ഡ് (നാലുകെട്ട്), വയലാര്‍ അവാര്‍ഡ് (രണ്ടാമൂഴം), ഓടക്കുഴല്‍ അവാര്‍ഡ് (വാനപ്രസ്ഥം), ജ്ഞാനപീഠ പുരസ്‌കാരം എന്നിവ ലഭിച്ചു. തിരക്കഥയ്ക്കുള്ള സംസ്ഥാന, ദേശീയ അവാര്‍ഡുകള്‍ പലതവണ കിട്ടി. നിര്‍മ്മാല്യത്തിന് മികച്ച ചലച്ചിത്രത്തിനുള്ള 1974-ലെ ദേശീയ അവാര്‍ഡും. കാലിക്കറ്റ് സര്‍വ്വകലാശാലയുടെയും മഹാത്മാഗാന്ധി സര്‍വ്വകലാശാലയുടെയും ഡി.ലിറ്റ് ബഹുമതി. 2004-ല്‍ പത്മഭൂഷണ്‍ ലഭിച്ചു.

Madath Thekkepaattu Vasudevan Nair, popularly known as M. T., was an Indian author, screenplay writer and film director. He was a prolific and versatile writer in modern Malayalam literature, and was one of the masters of post-Independence Indian literature. Randamoozham, which retells the story of the Mahabharata from the point of view of Bhimasena, is widely credited as his masterpiece.
At the age of 20, as a chemistry undergraduate, he won the prize for the best short story in Malayalam for Valarthumrigangal at World Short Story Competition jointly conducted by New York Herald Tribune, Hindustan Times, and Mathrubhumi. His first major novel, Naalukettu (The Legacy), written at the age of 23, won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1958. His other novels include Manju (Mist), Kaalam (Time), Asuravithu (The Demon Seed), and Randamoozham (The Second Turn). The emotional experiences of his early days went into his novels, and most of his works are oriented towards the basic Malayalam family structure and culture. His three novels set in traditional tharavads in Kerala are Naalukettu, Asuravithu, and Kaalam.
Nair was a screenwriter and director of Malayalam films. He directed seven films and wrote the screenplay for around 54 films. He won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay four times, for: Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989), Kadavu (1991), Sadayam (1992), and Parinayam (1994), which is the most by anyone in the screenplay category. In 1995 he was awarded the highest literary award in India, Jnanpith, for his overall contribution to Malayalam literature. In 2005, India's third highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan, was awarded to him.

This is another memoir by M.T. Each memoir by M.T. is special to me as we can see the beauty of Valluvanad and its people in each of them. As I was fortunate enough to live near those areas mentioned in M.T.’s memoirs in some crucial years of my life, reading each memoir brings me a lot of nostalgia. Just like most of M.T.’s books, this one will also always remain close to my heart.

In this book of memories, M.T. portrays a few of the personal events from his life - most of them from his younger days – through appealing narrative. These lucid descriptions also stand out as vivid snapshots of the social and cultural life of the Valluvanad region of Southern Malabar of his time. The memoir is accompanied by illustrations from Artist Namboodiri and these line sketches drawn in his signature style successfully captures the essence and mood of the memories.

To sum up, ‘Muthassimarude Rathri’, written with the same flair and eloquence that is often associated with M.T’s literary works is an engaging and nostalgic narrative…

5 ഓർമ്മക്കുറിപ്പുകളും ഒരു അഭിമുഖമാണ് ഇതിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. മുത്തശ്ശിമാരുടെ രാത്രി, കാശ്, കഞ്ഞി, കുപ്പായം, പുസ്തകം വായിച്ച് വേദന മായിച്ചുകിടന്ന കുട്ടി എന്നിവയാണ് ഓർമ്മക്കുറിപ്പുകൾ. 2015 എൻ പി വിജയകൃഷ്ണൻ മലയാള മനോരമ വാർഷികപതിപ്പിന് വേണ്ടി നടത്തിയ അഭിമുഖത്തിലെ കുറച്ച് ഭാഗമാണ് അവസാനം ചേർത്തിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഓർമ്മക്കുറിപ്പുകൾ എല്ലാം നമ്മളെ വൈകാരികമായി സ്വാധീനിക്കുന്നു. അഭിമുഖത്തിൽ നല്ലൊരു വായനക്കാരനായ എംടിയേയും നമ്മൾക്ക് കാണാം.

നിമിഷങ്ങൾ കടന്നു പോകും, ഓർമ്മകൾ എന്നെന്നും നിലനിൽക്കും. അല്ലെ? അതിപ്പോൾ നല്ല ഓർമ്മകൾ ആയാലും ചീത്ത ഓർമ്മകൾ ആയാലും. പഴയകാല ഓർമ്മകളിലൂടെ ചെറിയൊരു സഞ്ചാരം. അതാണ് എം.ടി. വാസുദേവൻ നായർ മുത്തശ്ശിമാരുടെ രാത്രിയിലൂടെ നമ്മളോട് പറയുന്നത്. അയവിറക്കിയ ഓർമ്മകളോരോന്നിനും ഓരോ ചെറുകഥയുടെ ഭംഗി. മുത്തശ്ശിമാരുടെ രാത്രി, കാശ്, കഞ്ഞി, കുപ്പായം, പുസ്തകം വായിച്ച് വേദന മായ്ച്ചുകിടന്ന കുട്ടി, വായനയുടെ വിളക്കുമാടങ്ങൾ എന്നിങ്ങനെ ആറ് അദ്ധ്യായങ്ങൾ ആണ് ഉള്ളത്.

കുട്ടിക്കാലത്ത് കൂടല്ലൂരിലെ വീട്ടിൽ നടന്ന ഭുവനേശ്വരീ പൂജയും അതിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കാൻ വന്ന മുത്തശ്ശിമാരും, പൂജയ്ക്കിടെ പനിച്ചു വിറച്ചു കിടന്ന കിടപ്പിൽ കണ്ട സ്വപ്നവും ആണ് മുത്തശ്ശിമാരുടെ രാത്രിയിലെ ഉള്ളടക്കം. കുട്ടിക്കാലം തൊട്ട് വീട്ടിലെ സാമ്പത്തിക ബുദ്ധിമുട്ട്, പഠിക്കുന്ന കാലം തൊട്ടേ പല മാസികകളിൽ അച്ചടിച്ചു വന്ന കഥകൾക്കുള്ള പ്രതിഫലങ്ങൾ കിട്ടിയത്, ജോലിക്ക് വേണ്ടിയുള്ള അന്വേഷണങ്ങൾ, പട്ടാമ്പി ഹൈസ്‌കൂളിലെയും അതിനു ശേഷം പാലക്കാട് എം.ബി. ടൂട്ടോറിയലിലെയും അധ്യാപനം, റൂറൽ ഡെവലപ്മെന്റ് അസിസ്റ്റന്റ് ആയി കിട്ടിയ ജോലി പരിശീലനത്തിന്റെ പാതി വഴിയിൽ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ചു വന്നത് - ഈ സംഭവങ്ങളാണ് കാശിൽ പറയുന്നത്. കുട്ടിക്കാലത്തെ ഭക്ഷണ ഓർമ്മകളാണ് കഞ്ഞിയുടെ സ്വാദോടെ വിളമ്പുന്നത്. കരുപറമ്പിലെ അമ്മിണി ഓപ്പുവിന്റെ കല്യാണത്തിന് പോവാൻ നല്ലൊരു ഉടുപ്പില്ലാത്തതായിരുന്നു കുപ്പായത്തിലെ പ്രശ്നം. അച്ഛൻ ശ്രീലങ്കയിൽ നിന്നും കൊണ്ടു വന്ന 'കിടക്കശ്ശീലയ്ക്ക് പറ്റുന്ന' തുണി കൊണ്ട് തുന്നിയ പുത്തൻകുപ്പായം ഇട്ടു അമ്മയോടൊപ്പം സന്തോഷത്തോടെയും അഭിമാനത്തോടെയും പോയി വന്ന കാര്യമാണ് കുപ്പായത്തിലെ പ്രതിപാദ്യവിഷയം. വലിയേട്ടന്റെ ഇളയമകൾ ശൈലജയുടെ, ലുക്കീമിയ ബാധിച്ചു ഹോസ്പിറ്റലിൽ കഴിയുന്ന മകൻ രാഹുലനും, പുസ്തകങ്ങളോടുള്ള അവന്റെ ഇഷ്ടവും, മനസ്സിൽ നൊമ്പരമായി എന്നെന്നും നീറുന്ന അവന്റെ അകാലമരണവും ആണ് പുസ്തകം വായിച്ച് വേദന മായ്ച്ചുകിടന്ന കുട്ടി പറയുന്നത്. 2015-ലെ മലയാള മനോരമ വാർഷികപതിപ്പിൽ വന്ന ഒരു അഭിമുഖമാണ് വായനയുടെ വിളക്കുമാടങ്ങൾ എന്ന പേരിൽ അവസാനത്തെ അദ്ധ്യായം. എം.ടി. നല്ലൊരു എഴുത്തുകാരൻ മാത്രമല്ല വളരെ നല്ലൊരു വായനക്കാരൻ കൂടിയാണെന്ന് ഒരിക്കൽ കൂടി മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നു. ഒരു പാട് നല്ല പുസ്തകങ്ങളെ പറ്റിയുള്ള വിവരങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട് ഇതിൽ. ചിലത് ഇനി വാങ്ങാനുള്ള പുസ്തകങ്ങളുടെ കൂട്ടത്തിലേക്ക് ഞാനും എടുത്തു വെച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

നല്ല അസ്സൽ വള്ളുവനാടൻ ഭാഷ വീണ്ടും കണ്ടതിൽ അതിയായ സന്തോഷം. ദശകങ്ങൾക്ക് മുന്നേയുള്ള ഒരു തലമുറയുടെ ഓർമ്മകൾ ആണ്. ഭംഗിയുള്ള എഴുത്തും സുഖകരമായ വായനയും. ഈ ഓർമ്മകൾക്ക് നല്ല സുഗന്ധം.

ജീവിതത്തെ ആസകലം വാരിപ്പുണരുന്ന ഓർമ്മകുറിപ്പുകളുടെ സമാഹാരം. മലയാളത്തിന്റെ പ്രീയപ്പെട്ട എഴുത്തുകാരൻ പിന്നിട്ട വഴികളും ഹൃദയത്തിൽ പാർപ്പുറപ്പിച്ച മനുഷ്യരും മനസ്സിൽ ആഞ്ഞു കൊത്തിയ അനുഭവങ്ങളും ചേതോഹരമായ ഭാഷയിൽ ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ വിടർന്നു നിൽക്കുന്നു.

Amazing read. I came across this for the first time in a book stall in town, yesterday, and made an immediate purchase. Some parts took me to the stories, my grandmother told me as a kid, highly possible for the relation she shares with the author and her life in Kudalloor. It was a walk down the memory lane with my grandmother.
