I am a self-published author who is enjoying myself. I love to write period! I have a MBA in Human Resource Management, but my first love has always been writing. Besides reading and writing, I love a good garden. I love to feel the dirt between my fingers. Yes, there may be a story there.

Some of my favorite authors are Richard Wright, Rosemary Rogers, Beatrice Smalls, Eric Gerome Dickey, Zane, Dean Koontz, and Stephen King just to name a few.

I am the founder of 'Southside Book and Writers Club,' we are located in Richmond, Va. We read everything, and we love promoting diversity, growth, and educating others about Indie Authors. Check us out on Facebook!

A Diamond in the Rough

Kim L. Walton’s My Motivation pulls me in with her conflict-driven plot, from lovers’ quarrels to tragic events that befall the naïve but levelheaded protagonist, Sandra.

Sandra is a self-aware young woman who overcomes a tragic event in high school that left her hanging by a thread. Though she is scarred from it, but as a strong-willed person, she does not sit and stew on it. Also, raised and guided by strong grandparents, especially her Nanny—her grandmother—she channels her pain and suffering into self-improvement. Nothing occupies one’s mind and says improvement than a fresh start in college, work, and new friends. Not to mention, whether innately or instilled in her, she is motivated and driven. She has a good head on her shoulders.

Unfortunately, her pasts catch up with her. It doesn’t help that she dates the wrong man. Troubles follow her wherever she goes. She soon realizes certain people she thought were her friends end up hurting her in every sense of the word. Men betray her; women want to make troubles for her. She finds herself in a terrible situation and makes one “stupid” choice after another. However, her beautiful, happy, and precious Motivation—a result from her mistake and tragedy—saves her at the end.

Ms. Walton seems to have a knack for telling a story and moving it along with short prose and sharp beat of the dialogue. I like the story. However, I will have to take one star away for misplacing commas, for inserting name in a dialogue to indicate to readers who is speaking to whom, and for misusing dialogue tags and using them ineffectively.

Examples of misusing commas:
“You treated, her like family and she does this to you.”
“Sandra those nasty, bitches!”

Examples of inserting name in dialogue:
“Sheila, the grinding got me the most, they were grinding so hard on the floor. I thought they should get a room.”
“Sandra, they both nasty as hell then, Candace should have known better.”

Examples of misusing dialogue tags:
“Sandra, have you called them already to get one” asked Sheila.
“Yes mam, I agree” Sheila replied.

Amazing!! and worthy of every penny....

I had gotten this book from the author in exchange for a review. This book was great, even though they were errors, it did not take anything away from the story. The main character Sandra was a strong willed woman that was mature for her age, she was optimistic and had a positive outlook on life. She went through so much from being cheated on, beaten and raped and have a child out of wedlock and in the end she was still fighting. She was a good person and did not deserve none of the bull that was tossed her way. It was sad and a bit surprising what her friend did to her-but it comes to show that not everyone is your friend. Her grandparents and her best friend Sheila had her back not to mention Mike(that was a surprise) her parents were punks that did not deserve someone with such nice personalities and traits. I would definitely recommend this book to persons who have been through rough patches. This is a good book to read and who know some of the main character optimism might transfer to you.

This is the story of how a young woman’s resilience, strength of character and positive mind-set triumphs over brutal, unprovoked violence and adversity. Her first person narrator’s voice is so powerful and ‘real’, the book feels more like an autobiography than a work of fiction.

The main character, Sandra Walts, inhabits a world a million miles away from mine and yet, as I read her account, I was right there with her the whole time, witnessing each event through her eyes and feeling her emotions as if they were my own – such is the author’s skill in bringing her characters to life.

I delighted in Sandra’s vibrant, earthy and outspoken personality; and thoroughly admired the way in which she is determined to put the violent physical attack she suffered during her high school years behind her and get on with living her life to the full. At the same time, however, I groaned at how naïve and gullible she is – but then who wasn’t when they were young? She is unwise in her choice of friends, often favouring those who will betray her, whilst neglecting those who have her best interests at heart; and she is foolish, if not “stupid”, in some of the decisions she makes.

Similarly, the characters of her two (ex-) boyfriends, Keith and Blake, are real and three-dimensional. Their behaviour and emotions, despite being seen from Sandra’s point of view, are credible and convincing – though that in no way excuses them. They are, in my opinion, unforgivable.

It should be noted that there is no gratuitous violence. Where there is violence, it is essential for the purposes of the story and the most brutal scene is only referred to after it has happened, rather than being reported ‘live’ as it occurs.

There are occasional errors in punctuation in the book, but these are relatively minor when weighed against the quality of the actual writing and the characters.

If you like true to life stories with a positive message and an upbeat ending, and a central character who is inspiring and unfailingly true to herself, you will enjoy “My Motivation”. I thoroughly recommend it.

So first and foremost I read this book out of order! I read book 2 and then got to go back and read book 1. So, for a little more on my thoughts the book 2 review might be a better look at things overall! haha

This book is a solid 3.5 stars, rounded up of course. One thing that keeps from being a solid 4 or 4.5 is for sure the cover. To me the cover reads as sci-fi, but the book is more real life fiction. So, that threw me off with the series overall.

However, the writing style and voice the author created is wonderful. I think I liked how things flowed a little more in the second book, but this could be thanks to the fact what I was reading was a little more of a review based on what I got in book 2. Also, you can see the authors growth in creating the story and characters. It made things a lot more well rounded for me, and honestly made me enjoy book 2 even more. Sandra again sang as a character, and was someone I felt connected to more and more as the book went on.

So glad I went back to read book 1, despite my error in reading out of order. But worth it thanks to the beautiful beginning it gives the characters!

This is a story where relationships are tested and love seems far from reach. The dialect is often slang in nature. Sandra and her roommate, Sheila attempt to understand how it all works. Yet, the relationship drama with Sandra’s boyfriend, Keith, speaks to a reluctance to commit. In this story, there are third parties that influence love connections. The third parties, Gloria and Blake, are significant as their behaviors serve to impact Sandra’s decisions; this includes former abuse and pain at the hands of her ex. Not to mention, the testosterone that comes into play when men square-off to mark their territory. It is also important to note how the past has influenced Sandra’s level of trust. Through it all, there are other characters that give the storyline excitement as college, love, faith, and playtime are juggled for balance. At the end of the day, Sandra must decide what is truly important to her … because this is her true motivation.
