Small-Town Grudges (Short Story #1): Prosecutor Kit Babcock faces off against her nemesis in the courtroom as well as out of it. Which one will get the last laugh?

A Modicum of Thanks (Short Story #2): Court clerk Liz McBride has had it with her boss. But she's smart enough to turn a bad situation into something wonderful--while getting a small dose of revenge on the side.

The Blogger's Regret (Short Story #3): Kit teaches a libelous blogger a thing or two about the law as well as justice.

Not By Way of Punishment (Prequel/Book 0): Marian Prescott, Kit's cousin, is forced to co-counsel a terrible legal ethics case with Henry Albritton, a former prosecutor who left his job after a feud with Harriet Winslow, Marian's recently-deceased boss. Marian doesn't like Henry and isn't sure she can trust him. But after a crime which leaves a witness dead, the two have to find a way to work together to not only win, but to avoid becoming victims themselves.

Elections and Consequences (Book #1): Kit wins a write-in election for clerk. But she's not sure if she'll take the office since it comes with being suspected of murdering her opponent.

Devil at the Bridge (Book #2): When a problem juror goes missing during a contentious murder trial, Kit questions whether his disappearance is related to sinister events far beyond the courtroom.

Character and Fitness (Book #3): It's hard to say no when the Supreme Court asks for help. Kit gets drafted to take a case against the worst attorney she ever prosecuted and fears she's being set up for failure on multiple fronts. But when her main witness disappears, she fears her problems are far worse than losing the case.

The Fourth Vote (Book #4): Kit finds herself the deciding vote on a committee to approve new courthouse plans--plans which have divided the community. Her personal and professional ambitions become further entangled after a threat to her mentor as well as her longtime boyfriend, Brett. And why has Brett been acting so odd? Is he about to propose?

Note: there is some chronological overlap between the short stories and Not By Way of Punishment .

I love these books!

I literally could not put these books down, just ask my husband. The books can stand alone, but reading consevlenty is better. Can’t wait for future novels. Five stars are not enough.

I enjoyed this set, although I wouldn't really consider the short stories to be short stories -- more like chapters that for some reason were omitted from the novels. Two criticisms: an awful lot of murder in a small town (but I guess that's the nature of fiction), and the books could use some serious editing (repetitive paragraphs, like the author rewrote a paragraph or sentence and forgot to delete the first version; missing words, etc).

Enthralling

This series is wonderful. Everyday people, albeit with a little more mayhem and murder than normal, doing everyday things. Highly recommend this series.
