The Sociology Student′s Guide to Writing, by Angelique Harris and Alia R. Tyner-Mullings, is a brief, economical reference work that gives practical advice about the writing tasks and issues that undergraduate students face in their first sociology courses. Along with more traditional topics, it incorporates valuable information about composing emails, writing for online forums, and using technology for information-gathering and note-taking. Used by itself or in combination with other texts, this book will increase the quality of student writing and enhance their knowledge of how sociologists communicate in writing.
Useful writing guide for sociology undergrads in traditional departments, semi-useful for social science students generally and perhaps in non-soc departments or teaching colleges. I assigned it this semester in a new "Writing for the Social Sciences" course. Bits and pieces were really helpful; other parts didn't fill the needs of the course. Chapters 2 (basics of writing), 3 (searching the literature), parts of 5 (on writing literature reviews and capstone projects), and 6 (editing and revising) I will continue pulling from. I assigned chapter 6 to my senior capstone class as well as they revised term papers. One other thing I enjoyed was the Writing in Practice boxes at the end of each chapter, which feature sociologists talking about how they approach each chapter topic in their work.
