Analyzes successful games and translates this unique analysis into a book that details the do's and don'ts of effective game development and marketing.
Games that sell was published in 2003 (!) - so if you want to understand how fast the games industry evolves get a used copy of it and read it. I read the book in 2008 and skimmed through it again the last days and now it´s really out of date. Honestly I don´t think the book was especially good in 2003 but it gave you some good input at this time while today it just gives you some points to rethink about. The most interesting part is the first third of the book that mentions the important factors that make games sell - like: Game Genres, Licenses and Franchising, Topic, Ambience, Story, Documentation, Range of Appeal and last but not least PR and Marketing. After 76 pages you could easily quit and not miss that much because afterwards comes an analysis of games that made it and the last third is about interviews with people from the games business and a survey with players. Barely interesting. So in a nutshell: Think about how to do to and solve the challenges and questions within the topics mentioned before and you are good to go: Game Genres, Licenses and Franchising, Topic, Ambience, Story, Documentation, Range of Appeal and last but not least PR and Marketing!
