Empowering Missional Disciples: An Introductions to 3D Movements

Rate this book
(249 Pages)

Bob has released two new books which introduce readers to the core principles of 3D Movements - A Jesus Shaped Life and Empowering Missional Disciples. Each of these books has been written with a different audience in mind. Discover which one is best for you.

There is one person in history who has lived a life unlike any other; a life of transforming grace and truth, love and power, sacrifice and victory. In Jesus we see the life we are meant to live; the life we long to live. Jesus promised this more abundant and fruitful life to all who would follow him. These two new books, A Jesus-Shaped Life and Empowering Missional Disciples, are introductions to this way of life, characterized by biblical empowerment, multiplying disciples who make disciples, and building extended families on mission. Both books follow a similar outline:

•Introduction: The three-dimensional shape of Jesus’ life and the communities he formed
•Part One: The biblical journey from restored identity into Jesus’ authority and power
•Part Two: The way Jesus made disciples who could do what he did
•Part Three: How Jesus built an extended family on mission to change the world

Each of these aspects of Jesus’ life are illustrated by the stories of real people who are on this journey today, and are augmented with practical tools that will help you live this way of life and pass it on to others. This book is written for church leaders who want to explore discipleship and mission within 3DMovements and for those who want to invite others to join them in this global movement.

The ideas in this book about Jesus' way of discipling others are simple and powerful, and when discussed with a few others and put into practice with their accountability and support, it is nothing less than transformative. If you just read it, it's fine ... even good. But as Jesus said, if we hear what He says and live how He lived (and disciple others the way He discipled people), we will be like a person who builds their house on a rock. I've appreciated this solid teaching that Bob gives, but I know Bob and have watched how He has lived it out ... and now I am learning to follow him as he follows Christ by discipling others.

Empowering Missional Disciples is a wonderful balance of solidly grounded and well-researched biblical insight and practical experiences and tools to put it into practice. Rognlien manages to uncover breathtaking insights about Jesus and his approach to mission and ministry while also encouraging and inspiring us to pursue Jesus more faithfully!

Rognlien shows biblically that what Jesus is most after from churches is that we make disciples (who look like Jesus and do what Jesus did) and join God in his mission to the world.

Speaking as a seasoned pastor, movemental leader, and follower of Jesus, Rognlien shares his own journey of failure, learning, discovery, and breakthrough as he’s sought to live and lead his church this way. Even better, he passes along practical tools and wisdom proven to help others come along on this journey as well. This book, written especially to church leaders, will inform, inspire, and equip you to be a better disciple of Jesus and to empower others you lead to be multiplying missional disciples as well.

Note: Not all will agree with Rognlien’s “charismatic” approach to prophecy and miracles, and though he thinks this is important, disagreeing with him on this point will not detract or distract from the value of this book. Also, along the way, he introduces us to 3D Movements and invites us to utilize their training and resources, but he does so naturally and graciously, not as a hard sell.

Bob Rognlien does an excellent job communicating the discipleship pathway set out by 3DM discipleship, Arguing that discipleship is done relationally through imitation that is initially modelled by Jesus and then his disciples, he sets out a language, the tools, and the forms in which a healthy and multiplying discipleship are fostered.

More than just a discussion on discipleship practices, it is an invitation to work through the principles yourself. It is a practical way forward in living out the Jesus-shaped life, rather than a curriculum.

A fair introduction to 3DM.

The concepts are simple, and probably have been covered by other writers in the past. There were times where I felt the book could have been shorter. The ideas seemed to be drilled in over and over. And I wondered if all the background was necessary. But at the end of it, that repetition helped. The backing and greek usage produced interesting ideas I've not thought of before.

It seems to be a helpful mode of communication. Though it doesn't give step by step instructions, it does provide language to use to help people be on the same page. I think some of the terminology is a bit cheesy at times, but it works.

Empowering Missional Disciples has piqued my interest enough to begin trying out Huddles, MCs, and re-evaluating worship gatherings. Even that idea alone, that worship gatherings no longer remain the focus of our Christian faith.

It's not a life-changing read, but perhaps the practice of the concepts, actually DOING what the book talks about will bring major change. I look forward to growing Up, In and Out!
