David Calcano is an author, director, and co-founder of Fantoons Animation Studios based in Los Angeles. He collaborates with world-renowned artists to develop animation, books, documentaries, and original stories.
He was born in Caracas, Venezuela and has been watching Disney, Warner, and UPA cartoons ever since he was inside his mom’s belly. As an adult, he moved to the UK where he worked as a systems engineer—at least until he went nuts and dropped his career to pursue his dream.
David has written authorized graphic novels and books about musicians including Rush, Tenacious D (Jack Black and Kyle Gass), The Beach Boys, Henry Mancini, Simón Díaz, Iron Maiden, Motörhead, Alice Cooper, Marillion, Frank Zappa, and Johnny Ramone, among many others.
He has directed animated music videos for timeless songs such as Ella Fitzgerald’s “Frosty the Snowman,” Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song,” Frank Sinatra’s “Have Yourself a Meery Little Christmas,” Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas,” and Chuck Berry’s “Run Rudolph Run,” among many more.
Fantoons' animated shorts have won multiple awards at film festivals around the world. The studio also collaborates with the Disney Channel, for whom they created a series to promote healthy habits through original quirky characters and mini-musicals that incorporate various genres, from blues to hip-hop and even punk rock.
Currently, David is focused on crafting beautiful stories that connect with hearts and souls, using the magic of both animation and music—made possible by the creative spirit of the artists at Fantoons Animation Studios.
Written by David Calcano and drawn by various artists, this is very much a book for Rush fans only. Others might derive some pleasure form it, especially from some of the better art (though all of it is at least solid), but if you are not a fan of the band, a lot of it will probably leave you scratching your head. There are straight-up gag cartoons, parody posters, an odd sequence of parody Ruch-inflected cereal brands, and various other tidbits. They are often amusing, at least if one gets the references, and there is some very good art. MIka Kazaleh's pastiche of Al Capp's L'il Abner featuring Rush was especially nice, I thought. There's even some mild cheesecake art, sometimes referencing the Permanent Waves album jacket but with nods to several others as well (the Signals Dalmation engaging in behaviour reminiscent of the dog in the old Coppertone ads, but not with a kid, was another amusing one). Anyway, this is a lovely addition to any Rush fan's collection.
