Dicovering Eden permits an all to brief look at what a near perfect world would be like. Between the book's pages a wondrous, natural world unfolds and readers are allowed a somewhat vicarious peek into a natural environment that has not been trampled by civilization.
I discovered that Al Hall, who I met in Australia in 1964, had written this book. It's a beautiful read. Many anecdotes that struck familiar for me. Much information. Incredible tales of wildlife. Pictures are best on his website.
I read Discovering Eden as one of several books about canoeing in northern Canada when a friend spent a month paddling the Coppermine River. I really enjoyed the first half of this book as Hall describes discovering the north country, deciding to live there, and finding that he can support himself as a canoe guide. I enjoyed his descriptions paddling the Thelon and other rivers and find that I have read enough about this area to be able to picture the map in my mind. Toward the end the book is less satisfying and I skipped chunks of it.
