I'm glad I found this two act play when searching for books about the Red Scare/ McCarthyism era. Set in 1951, this is meant to be satirical to show the absurdity of the paranoid and hysteria occurring during the era, while Communism is in fact really taking over Hollywood within the world of the play. What starts off with main character, and Hollywood it-girl, Pat firing her co-star due to her suspicion that he is involved with Communism quickly turns into a high stakes story, full of conspiracy and secrets. I enjoyed the quick read and would definitely see this performed.
Poor excuse for a comedy, this includes -- in no particular order -- offensive language, gay seduction, blackmail, sexual deviance, alcoholism, drug use, attempted murder, and suicide. And none of it is funny, even in a dark way. I'm sorry I read it. Definitely not right for our audience or our cast and I can't imagine how it could be performed by anybody without being offensive and depressing. How did this even get published?
