Done in 1976, this book of short stories is like an artists' sketch book for Bromell's later work. You can almost watch his mind working as he develops characters, plays with dialogue, plot, devices.
It is always good to see how an author's gift develops over time. If this collection hadn't stayed with me, I wouldn't have picked up his 2001 novel, 'Little America' which I'd recommend without reservation.
The author has gone over to television dramas since these books, including the recent hit 'Homeland', whose nascent character types can be seen in these earlier works.
This book contains:
Partial Magic, I Know Your Heart, Marco Polo, The World in a Room, and Travel Stories.
..."I used to think Pa was so strong, but now I look at him nodding in front of that goddamn television and think, 'He's week. He's nothing. Bones and bones. He has no idea why he's alive.' Then I look at myself and think, 'You're not much better Sam.'"
He's good at the intergenerational WASP inheritances; silence, 'Cold War', guilt, too much booze, too many cigarettes... The last line of last story was a shocker.
