Excerpt from The Standard-Alphabet Problem, or the Preliminary Subject of a General Phonic System: Considered on the Basis of Some Important Facts in the Sechwana Language of South Africa, and in Reference to the Views of Professors Lepsius I have been prompted by such considerations as the above to publish, for the information of others devoted to the study of language, the results of my Observations during a few years of assiduous research in an elementary branch of the subject. This I had long selected for my own amusement and instruction in leisure moments of a professional vocation; and having recently been engaged in an active trading life on aiwide frontier, among native tribes, the destruction of whose language is as inevitable as their speedy social dissolution, I have enjoyed unusual facilities for the prosecution of my Object.
