"No" is the strongest word in your vocabulary, and, with the help of Steven Appleby and George Mole's new book, you'll learn to use the power of the negative to confirm who you really are. Pithy sayings like 'You will never achieve intimacy', 'Your Guardian Angel Is On Strike' and 'Embarrassment is another way of reminding myself I am foolish and unworthy' - each brought to life with Steven Appleby's superb full-colour illustrations - allow readers to harness their negativity, and, with repeated recitations (preferably in public) help set them on the path to debasement and lowered expectations. Why not take a few moments to make yourself the person you always feared you were? Why waste time on hopes and dreams when you can resent yourself in the now? Let Negative Affirmations help you shine a bright light into every nook and cranny of your pathetic psyche!
The front of this book contains an affirmation, with drawing, that says "In the Garden of the Spirit I am a Noxious Weed" which I found quite amusing, and there are places in this book where there are successful renditions of this kind of humour, some where it doesn't work so well, but the standard is high. The drawings are pretty good, too.
The idea is to satirise the growing pressure to be positive about everything, however misleading and problematic that might be. The authors admonish you to speak the phrases out loud, as if they were mantras, but I baulked at that because some of the statements were pretty ordinary, as Australians would put it, and that didn't sound like a good idea at all.
The interesting thing about all that is that in some mystical traditions there is the paradox "I am nothing before God/I am God" which I think you get with Meister Eckart and the Sufis, but I could be wrong. The more cynical might see it as a negotiation strategy, but I understand the paradox, even though not mystically inclined.
I'm not sure what to do with the book, actually, as there's something about it that's compelling, and another part that makes you want to put it away, a great distance in fact. Another paradox, I suppose. A cheap read, worthwhile.
