Ray is an ordinary man in his mid-forties, leading an ordinary life with an ordinary family until extraordinary events thrust him into a world of turmoil, that threatens his family and the whole of mankind. Forced to flee their home from an invading force and seeking shelter in a remote cave, Ray decides to record his thoughts in a diary, which is the basis for this amazing story. Ray Hall's new novel is an incredible tale of one man's gradual realisation that far from being just an ordinary husband and father, he is, and has been for centuries, a key character in the fight to keep the world from being overrun by the devil and his evil hoards. This is the Start tells of Ray's latest battles with Satan.

Planes are filling the sky. Bombs are falling. War is starting. But how will he save his family?

‘This is the start of my story’ is a tale of bravery, battle, love and determination. It is a first-person masterpiece.

By being written in first person I believe it is what makes this novel so vivid and realistic. The characters are typically British, which I can relate with. Ray, the author, has clearly spent a great dealing of time creating these characters. They are oozing with realism. From their reactions, actions, right down to the way they talk and present themselves. There is nothing over-the-top or unrealistic.

This journey is fast-paced, taking us on an epic thrill ride. When the world is at war, what are you supposed to do? Fight? Protect your family? Or seek out food, shelter and safety until it is all over? Well Ray puts that question to the test. What would a person do in an end-of-the-world scenario?

I was hooked from page one! We follow an intriguing group of characters as they stumble through a war-ridden world. At first they have little knowledge of what is going on. Who is attacking, and why? But as the story unfolds, they find out more about the attacks and their motives.

I particularly loved the bomb scenes as I was genuinely scared for the characters. Thanks to Ray’s terrific writing, I could easily put myself in their place. I could imagine being somewhere and suddenly planes fill the sky and bombs start to plummet to the ground. I can picture how scared and helpless I would feel. But reading about all the character’s various reactions was addictive. Not just in the war scenes per say, but in general. An apocalypse would affect people differently. Some would be strong, others would whimper, and some would go completely insane. If they are lucky enough to survive. And Ray spares no expense in making this story real. Even if it comes to killing people we become attached to as a reader.

Overall, an explosive masterpiece (literally). A man determined to protect his family any way he can. But with the world at war and bombs falling from the sky, how is one man supposed to fight that?

I highly recommend this book. It is the perfect summer read.
