About the author

Heinz G. Konsalik (pseudonym of Heinz Günther) was a German novelist.

Many of his books deal with war and showed the German human side of things as experienced by their soldiers and families at home, for instance Das geschenkte Gesicht (The Mutilated Face), which deals with a German soldier's recovery after his sledge ran over a personnel mine and destroyed his face, and how this affected his relationship with his wife at home. It places no judgment on the German position in the war and simply deals with human beings in often desperate situations, doing what they were forced to do under German military law.

Der Arzt von Stalingrad (The Doctor of Stalingrad) made him famous and was adapted into a movie in 1958. Some 83 million copies sold of his 155 novels made him the most popular German novelist of the postwar era and many of his novels were translated and sold through book clubs. He is buried in Cologne.

Ich schätze, wie respektvoll über die Patienten geredet wurde, aber es war echt ein Dorn im Auge, jedes Mal die Beschreibungen von Ewald Peltzners Körper zu hören, einfach unnötig, und es hat sich einfach so angefühlt, als ob sein Gewicht usw. genannt wurde, um klarzustellen, dass er der Bösewicht ist, genauso wie oft schlechte Menschen in anderen Medien als hässlich charakterisiert sind. Ich mag es echt nicht, wenn die unschuldige Person als schön beschrieben wird und die böse Person als hässlich, weil nicht jede Person so im echten Leben ist und somit eine falsche Einbildung der Welt repräsentiert.

Nichtsdestotrotz mag ich, dass Gisela bei dem Vergewaltigungsversuch geglaubt wurde, und dass Monique starb, hat mich echt geschockt, und das Ende mit Ewald in der Anstalt hat das Buch in meinen Augen verbessert.

This book was on the shelf in our holiday home in Germany. I'm not really a 'Konsalik' fan, however some of his books have an intriguing plot, so too this book.

The story starts when the family of Gisela Peltzner - the sole heiress of millions, after her father has died suddenly during a hunting party - brings her to a psychiatric clinic. In fashbacks the story tells what has happened before Gisela is forcibly trapped in the clinic.
Gisela's father Bruno Peltzner, the owner of the Peltzner Factory, has discovered that his brother Ewald secretly has taken large sums of money from the factory's bank account to solve his gaming debts. Bruno accuses his brother of malversation and requires that the amount has to be repaid within a month. Brother Ewald feels threathened.
Bruno organizes a hunting party with family, friends and a number of rich bussiness representatives. When after the hunt, Bruno doesn't turn up gor dinner and search is organized and they find him dead. It looks like an accident, for his body is found near the place where the hunt has taken place. Probably Bruno has been standing in the line of fire and been hit by a stray bullet.
