I read through this book with great enjoyment, so much so that we managed to get hold of a copy on eBay after returning the library copy. The photographs are fantastic, as I expect from Dorling Kindersley. It is the content that slightly disappointed me. The first part of the book is more like a directory of herbs, which I relished. The second part provides recipes and mixtures. The ingredients are not easy to come by, certainly not out in nature, and also expensive. This meant that, apart from a few carefully selected brews, I ended up thinking it would be cheaper and easier just to buy the final product rather than expend time and energy in trying to replicate it myself. I attempted one of the simple recipes for a drink, using fresh lemon balm from the garden, lemon juice and honey, but it was revolting because however much I wizzed up the lemon balm leaves, they tasted like tough old tea leaves in my mouth. Yuk!

Great starter book on herbalism. It has loads of info on herbs and what they do, how to use them, recipes for both foods and health and beauty products and info on how to grow, forage and buy herbs.

I took off one star. Although the book gives a photo for each plant/herb mentioned, fruits from the plant are not portrayed even though it’s sometimes the only part used. A photo would be helpful in recognizing them. Also, there are some lists in the book for herbs that work for different problems/areas (like digestion, female issues, etc.). I would have liked to see a quick reference list in the back for every problem/condition and the suggested or mentioned herbs that can be used for it.
