About the author

Jahanara Imam (Bangla: জাহানারা ইমাম) was a Bangladeshi writer and political activist. She is most widely remembered for her efforts to bring those accused of committing war crimes in the Bangladesh Liberation War to trial. She was known as "Shaheed Janani" (Mother of Martyrs).

She obtained her Bachelor's Degree in 1947 from Lady Brabourne College of Calcutta University and a Master's Degree from University of Dhaka. She took teaching as her career.

After Bangladesh achieved independence, Jahanara Imam started her literary career. In 1986 she published her wartime diary একাত্তরের দিনগুলি (The days of Seventy One). Publication of this book was a seminal event in the history of Bangladesh. It proved to be a catalyst for the renewal of faith in the destiny of Bangladesh as an independent nation.

Jahanara Imam organized the Ghatak-Dalal Nirmul Committee (Committee to exterminate the Killers and Collaborators), and became its public face. The committee called for the trial of people who committed crimes against humanity in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War in collaboration with the Pakistani forces. The Ghatak-Dalal Nirmul Committee set up mock trials in Dhaka in March 1992 known as Gonoadalot (Court of the people) and 'sentenced' persons they accused of being war criminals. Imam and others were charged with treason.[citation needed] This charge was, however, dropped in 1996 after her death by the Chief Advisor Mohammed Habibur Rahman of the Caretaker government of that time.

She was died of cancer in 1994. She was honored with Bangla Academy Award in 1991.

ভাল্লাগসে খুব বইটা... যদিও হুট করেই শেষ হয়ে গেছে।

চিরচেনা শহর, দেশ আর আত্মীয়স্বজনকে পিছনে ফেলে নতুন সংসার গোছাতে আমেরিকায় পারি দেয় সাদাসিধে সহজ-সরল মেয়ে সাকিনা। নতুন দেশে, নতুন জায়গায় স্থির হতে না হতে জীবনে একটা বিশাল ধাক্কার মুখোমুখি হয় সে। গল্পটা সাকিনার একার.. ঠিক ওই নি:সঙ্গ পাইন গাছটার মতোই।

নিজেকে মেয়ে ভাবার আগে মানুষ ভাবা শিখতে হবে, আত্মসম্মান আর মর্যাদা নিয়ে বেঁচে থাকার জন্য সবার আগে প্রয়োজন অর্থনৈতিক মুক্তি-ব্যক্তিগতভাবে খুব মানি এই কথাটা। আজকালকার যুগে প্রচলিত উইম্যান ইম্পাওয়ারমেন্টের মটো এভাবে বইয়ের পাতায় উঠে আসতে দেখায় মনে হল ব্যাপারটা আরো ভালো করে রিয়েলাইজ করা গেল। বইয়ের সবচেয়ে বড় চমক বোধহয় জাহানারা ইমাম নিজে।

খুব সাধারণ চোখ না পড়ার মতো ছোট্ট দুটো লাইন, কিন্তু গভীর তার ভাবার্থ.মানুষ যদি একটি গাছ হয়,তবে জীবন নামের রাস্তায় সে আসলেই বড়ই নিঃসঙ্গ।

আর এই জীবন যদি শুরু হয় বাঙালি আচার ব‍্যবহারে বড় হওয়া এক মেয়ে যার ঘরের বাইরে বের হওয়ার আগেই হোক বা জীবন সাথী বেছে নেওয়ার বিষয়ে;বাপ ভাইয়ের বিশেষ উপদেশ, আদেশ নিষেধ প্রতিপদে মেনে চলাই একমাত্র ভবিতব্য।
সেখানে বিদেশ বিভুঁইয়ে ঘর ভেঙে যাওয়ার পর একা লড়াইয়ের পথটা বেশ সুখকর নয়,বিশাল পৃথিবী বহু দিকে এগিয়ে গেলেও আজন্ম সংস্কারে মানসিকভাবে পরনির্ভরশীলতার পরগাছা হয়ে পতির পূনে‍্য সতীর পূন‍্য এই বানী দিব‍্যজ্ঞানে আজো বাঙালির অস্থিমজ্জাগত।

এরকম একটি জায়গা থেকে জীবনের এক ভ্রান্তিকে ভুলতে অন‍্য ভ্রান্তিতে জড়িয়ে না পরা এক আটপৌরে সাধারণ মেয়ে গল্পের কারিগর জাহানারা ইমাম মনের অন্ধি-সন্ধিকে উলট পার্ট করে পুনরায় ভাবতে বাধ্যই করে।

জাদুর শহরে নতুন একটি ম্যাজিক প্লেসের খোঁজ পেয়েছি- দীপনপুর। বুকশপ কাম ক্যাফে। এখানে বসেই পড়ে ফেললাম বইটা।

গল্পটা সাদাসিধে।
"লোন পাইন রোড" নামে একটা রাস্তা আছে মিশিগান শহরে। রাস্তার মানের মতই বিষাদগ্রস্থ মেয়ে সাকিনার গল্প নিঃসঙ্গ পাইন।

রেটিং- তিন তারা।

হুট করে যেন শেষ হয়ে গেলো সাকিনার কাহিনী। আর ইয়াসমিনের সাথেই বা কী রহস্য ছিল খোলাসা হল না। লেখিকা নিজেকে উপন্যাসটির একটি চরিত্র হিসেবে যেভাবে দাঁড় করিয়েছেন, তা সত্যিই অভিনব। তবুও একটু যেন খাপছাড়া। কোন চরিত্রই ঠিকমতো বিকশিত হয়ে উঠতে পারেনি মনে হয়েছে।

সাকিনা, ভার্সিটি পড়ুয়া এক মেয়ে। হটাৎ করে বিয়ে হয়ে যায় আমেরিকা প্রবাসী ডাক্তার ছেলের সাথে। পাচ মাসের মাথায় অন্তসত্তা সাকিনা পাড়ি জমায় স্বামীর কাছে আমেরিকা। সেখানের সাকিনার জীবন যুদ্ধ লেখিকা তুলে ধরেছেন অসাধারণ তুলির আচড়ে। মুগ্ধ হয়ে পড়ার মতো একটা বই।
