"This is a book about the end of the world. Or the end of the world as we know it, at least. I can't imagine any more important a subject about which to write a book. The world will end one day, probably when something dramatic happens in the natural development of the star we call the Sun... It isn't that end of the world that this book is about. Instead, it's about an end of the world that may come as a result of an intervention in the natural order of events... A time of visions, and not just of visions, but of messages, visitations, discoveries, and of inexplicable journeys away from the world. We are looking forward to a day that may come soon, when everything will change, and will change us."

Published in 1996, this now reads as something of a historical document focusing on some of the more outlandish expressions of the angst that preluded the turn of the millennium. That said, the kinds of belief systems and prophecies it summarises haven't disappeared entirely at this juncture either, such that they don't read as all that unfamiliar. It's an entertaining read, mostly for its light, sceptical tone, which is quite fitting given the nature of much of the content. At times—and this is quite a compliment, coming from me—it put me in mind of Jose Chung's appearance on "Millennium", even though its conclusion strikes a more optimistic tone than"Doomsday Defense"'s prediction of "one thousand more years of the same old crap".
