Gareth and Jen are perfect parents to five year old Ana. They would do anything for her.

And when the zombie apocalypse happens, they continue to be the perfect parents.

And they continue to do anything for her.

What a concept for a book, “Your six-year old daughter has been bitten by a zombie and now hungers for human flesh.” Little Monster is one of those great scruples books. At what point does putting your family first go too far?

James Plumb has done a marvelous job of presenting this scruples story. Gareth’s world is flipped upside down when his daughter, Ana, is attacked. James Plumb has woven us into the lives of Gareth and Jen, as the story revolves around them and their baby girl. All that is going on outside of this family is not important. This focus on the nuclear family allowed me to immerse myself into their lives.

From the synopsis I was anticipating a very dark, dismal tale, but I was pleasantly surprised with the well-placed comedic banter between the characters. It really added to the enjoyment and relatability of the characters. When the characters have real life problems, it helps to create a better connection with them.

In the end, can I agree with Gareth’s decisions? Would I do the same thing? It’s hard to say before you spend a couple of weeks in his shoes.

...he realised that he felt the briefest glimmer of pride at the idea that he could indeed kill to protect his family.

A young Welsh couple, parents to an extra-precious and coddled five year old girl, have to face a new reality: their darling Anna is seriously ill, having been bitten by a mysterious stranger at the playground. Anna's condition deteriorates rapidly into constant rounds of cleaning up shit and vomit while her parents try to give her food and medicine, which she consistently rejects. What's a young, over-protective parent to do?

Try something different on the menu?

The best installment of the Year of the Zombie hands down this ripper of a tale is going to be hard to beat. This is my first taste of James Plumb and I am definitely going back for seconds.

Little Monster asks the question of who far would you go to keep your little monster alive....kind of. The compassion of parents dealing with a life altering bite to their princess is put to the test. When is enough, enough? It really is surprising just how far some parents will go.

Talk about going to great lengths for your child

I chose my rating based on the well crafted story, the depths to which a parent will go for their little ones, truly knows no boundary. It's primal. It's deep. It's love. It's madness!
