It is hard to write fairly about the Civil War, because it is still such an open wound in the United States. The author tries hard to be objective, but that objectivity itself can be problematic. For example, there's a side bar that says "Nearly one-third of all Southern families owned slaves." Okay, but I assume you mean "white families," because one-third to one half of Southern families were enslaved people. And it says that Jackson himself wasn't fighting to preserve slavery, but if you lead a war to defend slavery that causes the deaths of tens of thousands of people, your personal views don't really matter.
