In the city with eight million stories, there was a dark tale of a young Ghanaian emigrant woman looking for adventure in New York because selling fruit in the market in Ghana bored her.
Sheddi Dedzo was a very intelligent woman who learned photography, and happened upon a bodega robbery. She clicked away, and gave her camera to a police detective.
Detective Tanaka caught the criminals because of her pictures, and put her in school to become a real freelance investigative photographer.
She moved in with Moira McGuiness, a hedge fund manager. They became fast friends.
Moira was promiscuous, and asked Sheddi to take pictures of her, and her new handsome Rastafarian beau Jabril. She didn’t know him well enough. Sheddi agreed. She thought it was a break from all the illegal activities the recorded.
The couple went to the Jamaican Jerk club, and Sheddi followed. Jabril brought Moira to the adjacent alley to meet another Jamaican male. Sheddi took pictures from across the street.
Moira found out she was being recruited by a sinister Jamaican drug syndicate, and refused the offer. The Jamaican syndicate head shot her in the back, Sheddi screamed, and was seen by the two men.
She ran from them, and thought out of all her criminal picture taking, in helping her friend, she made a wrong step. How will she get out if being chased by a drug dealing Jamaican posse?

A Gripping Urban Thriller with a Strong Female Lead

“Wrong Step” is a thrilling, fast-paced urban adventure that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The story follows Sheddi Dedzo, a smart and ambitious Ghanaian emigrant, whose passion for photography lands her in the middle of a deadly game with a ruthless Jamaican drug syndicate.

The novel does an excellent job of blending suspense, action, and cultural depth. Sheddi is a fantastic protagonist—resourceful, courageous, and determined. Her journey from an amateur photographer to an investigative force is both inspiring and intense. The dynamic between her and Moira McGuiness adds an intriguing layer of friendship, trust, and betrayal, making the stakes feel even higher when Moira finds herself entangled with the wrong people.

The book shines in its detailed depiction of New York, capturing both the vibrancy and the danger of the city. The multicultural elements bring authenticity, while the action sequences are heart-pounding and well-paced. The subtle humor and hints of romance add just the right balance to the tension-filled plot.

Overall, Wrong Step is a must-read for fans of crime thrillers, urban fiction, and strong female protagonists. It delivers on action, intrigue, and emotion, making it impossible to put down. Highly recommended!

Wrong Step delivers the pulse of a true urban thriller danger in every shadow, secrecy in every alley, and a heroine whose courage grows with every page. Kyle Robertson paints a vivid picture of Sheddi Dedzo, a young Ghanaian woman whose curiosity and skill with a camera place her right in the middle of a world she never expected to navigate.

One moment that stood out brilliantly to me is when Sheddi witnesses Moira being shot and realizes in an instant that she’s been seen that a single scream and a single picture have put her life in jeopardy. The fear, the shock, and the instinct to run feel incredibly real, pulling you deep into her panic and determination.

What makes this book compelling is how Sheddi balances intelligence with bravery, navigating multicultural landscapes, criminal networks, and her own instincts for survival. The portrayal of the Jamaican syndicate is tense and frightening, and the book’s blend of action, dark humor, PTSD elements, and romance creates a layered story that keeps you invested.

Wrong Step is gritty, fast-paced, and emotionally charged a powerful read for fans of urban crime fiction and strong female leads.
