Asaoka Modoru writes books just the way I like them. If you're looking for typical BL novels, they're most likely not for you, but if you like gay love stories somewhat grounded in reality, I highly recommend this.
Ibuki is a 17 year old gay boy who takes the bus to school each morning. He likes watching the ordinary drama that unfolds there each day, but then he unexpectedly becomes part of that same drama and ends up getting to know the goodlooking man in his early thirties. Kenji is the vice president of a software company, and the two of them hit it of surprisingly well. Thanks to Kenji, Ibuki finally manages to get out of his shell and make friends, of course falling in love with Kenji in the process. He also comes out to his friends and to his mother, and while it doesn't go smoothly exactly, it also isn't overly dramatic.
So much of this was perfectly done, and the rough looking illustrations by yoco match the tone of the story very well. My major gripes are the pacing - it all happens a tad too fast, which marrs the realism for me somewhat - and the age difference. She has similar couples in some of her other books as well, and while I am okayish with it, too often it's too much of a non-issue inside the story - even when it's talked about it's brushed aside too easily. I'm talking from personal experience here, and it just always leaves an odd taste in my mouth. Again, it's something I wouldn't even mind as much in a story that doesn't feel as realistic as this one, but as it is I am subtracting one star for it.
