As Salt City's only alchemist, Malcolm Ward has been minding his own business for the last ten years. His shop, The Village Alchemist, caters to mages, mystics, and magic wannabes-including Tommy DeLuce, the mayor's son. But when a fire elemental kills Tommy, the city council demands that Mal investigate. The trail from the fire elemental to Tommy isn't exactly a straight line; it's more like a circle. An elemental means alchemy, but everyone assumed Mal was the only alchemist in town. Now he's taking it personally. Malcolm's alchemical mojo is a bit rusty, so he'll need help from his friends in the metaphysical community to uncover the truth about Tommy's death. And he needs to do it soon, before more customers go missing.

I read a lot of urban fantasy and don't expect much from Kindle Unlimited - there's not many in the genre that are professionally edited and published. Very favorably impressed with this book, though I found the main character rather flat until the last quarter of the book. That may have been intentional, however. I did pick out the "bad guy" far before it was given away in the book, but I found it entertaining and well-written. The book has a very original and consistent internal mythology that demonstrates the author has an understanding of the western mystery tradition and hermeticism, which was a nice surprise. I'll be looking for what this author does next!
I received this book from the Goodreads First Reads program.
A little bit Sorcerer's Apprentice, a lot of action. There is magic, methodology, mythology, betrayl, and subterfuge. I personally figured out the "perpetrator" early and in the story, but knowing didn't take away from the story itself.
This book is full of magic and the metaphysical, humor and heart, and best of all, plenty of action. Even better than the Dreseden Files, in my opinion.
Urban fantasy with a hero who is not only an alchemist but apparently is far older than he looks. If in Salt Lake City one feels as though swinging by his shop is possible. What I liked most was the use of elemental rather than zombies, werewolf, vampires, etc. Interesting new series with the promise of Mal Ward developing in new directions in the future.
The story was intriguing. Good character building, suspense and action. Looking forward to the sequel. The only negative is that the main character often appeared weak. However he seemed to get through most challenges.
