Aubers Ridge

Rate this book
This book describes the action of 9 May 1915 when the battalions of the 1st Division, 7th Division and the Indian Army attacked Aubers Ridge. Their objective was to break the German line and cut the supply route to the enemy troops fighting to the south against a French Offensive at Vimy Ridge.

In true Battleground style, the dramatic story is told through the actions of those involved in the fighting. Places and points of interest are highlighted and for those fortunate enough to visit the area there are excellent directions and hints on how to best capture the atmosphere.

History and Tour

A brief history of the attack at Aubers Ridge during The Great War. The book also contains guided directions regarding how to tour the battlefield by car and foot.

It was interesting and a quick read. One main takeaway was that this battle, which seems such a disaster and entailed the loss of a great deal of combatants for little gain, is not that well known because the Dardanelles situation was big in the news at the same time.

Towards the end of the book there is reprinted the orders for action and a helpful bibliographic source list. I found that also interesting for further study.
