New, completely revised second edition of the most detailed Mount Whitney Guidebook on the market is now available. Expanded trail guide includes new photos. Brand new sections Bears, Wildlife, Weather, History of Trail & Summit Hut, and Mountaineers Route.
I co-authored this book. What I learned was, besides a lot about Mount Whitney, how to write, publish and sell a book! Doug Thompson is a master mountain-climber and cares a lot about the people who come to visit "The Mountain." I think of him as the re-embodiment of John Muir. It was a priviledge to work with him (and his wife and son) on this project.
Doug Thompson, the owner of the Whitney Portal Store (with his wife, who can tell who's been on the Mountain by the tell-tale "Whitney Walk"), is a super nice guy, full of knowledge and experience. He took the time to package this up for folks (along with San Diego co-author Elisabeth Newbold), and the book is a must for anyone thinking of climbing or staying on the continental U.S.'s highest peak. It may not be the most literary of writings, but it's damned useful and in the right spirit.
This book had lots of useful information and became a sort of fifth companion on our trip to Whitney, but the writing is truly terrible. If you can weed your way through the strange sentences, there's lots off good tips in here. The trail description of the Mountaineers Route saved us more than once.
