Basic Black by Sam Stone is a dark, punchy blend of noir grit and psychological horror that delivers far more impact than its short length might suggest. Centered on Annie Jones a writer haunted by violent visions the story blurs the line between imagination and reality in unsettling ways.

Stone leans into a stripped down, hard edged style that fits the noir tone perfectly, while layering in a creeping sense of dread as Annie’s fictional horrors begin to feel all too real. The concept of a creator losing control over their own darkness adds a compelling meta edge to the narrative.

Despite its brevity, Basic Black leaves a lasting impression, offering a quick but intense reading experience filled with tension, unease, and sharp storytelling.

A solid pick for readers who enjoy noir with a psychological twist and stories that linger after the final page.

Stranger than fiction

Ridiculous as it was I enjoyed this book. It was well well written and the author avoided the pitfall of being too long winded. Easy to read escapism is good for the soul.
