I liked the theme of the book, about a kid who is usually kind who suddenly struggles with jealousy when his grandma pays more attention to the new baby. However, the characters in the book are confusing. J.P., who has a great imagination, is referred to alternately as a kid and as a (fantasy) dog. Since there's also a dog in the pictures, sometimes it was hard to tell if J.P. was a kid pretending to a be a dog or the actual dog. Secondly, my kids also got confused about if the grandma had a monster or a baby, though it became clear eventually that the monster was actually the baby. My 3YO and 6YO liked it more when we read it a second time because then the plot made more sense.
