John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

As a student pastor, Dr. McGee's first church was located on a red clay hill in Midway, Georgia. It was there that he received his greatest compliment: "It was from a country boy wearing high buttoned, yellow shoes. After a morning service he came to speak to me. He groped for words, then blurted out, 'I never knew Jesus was so wonderful!' He started to say more but choked up and hurried out of the church. As I watched him stride across the field, I prayed, 'Oh, God, help me to always preach so that it can be said, I never knew Jesus was so wonderful.'"

After completing his education (earning his A.B. from Southwestern University in Memphis, Tennessee; his B.D. from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia; his Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, Texas), and after pastoring Presbyterian churches in Decatur, GA, Nashville, TN, and Cleburne, TX, he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, where he accepted a call to the Lincoln Avenue Presbyterian Church. He recalls this period as the happiest in his life, with a young family and a young congregation whom he loved.

Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic, Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970. There he began a daily radio broadcast called "High Noon Bible Class" on a single station.

Dr. McGee began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Today the program airs on over 400 stations each day in the United States and Canada, is heard in more than 100 languages around the world and is broadcast worldwide via the Internet.

Very good book....I can't wait to read the rest of his series on the Bible

I like the way Vernon McGee has done ....I like the he sets and explains everything in just plain ol' everyday language type setting ....you do not need a dictionary next to you in order to look up some off the wall adjective or adverb as some of these writers "love" doing I guess to impress the audience in their wide range of vocabulary...idk?....I think the majority of ppl just want the basic facts or interpretation in just as basic of English as you can get...writers need to remember....you're talking to a lot of people that may not have a bunch of letters behind their name and some may not even have a four year college degree....so the only ppl those writers are impressing are themselves and the colleagues that they compete with on a subject ....keep it simple nobody cares if you know a bunch of 4 or 5 syllable words ....so thank you Mr. McGee for doing just that on this book and I look forward to enjoying the remaining books in this series...thanks again! Found this book for 2 dollars at a used book store and had planned on reading the book of Daniel soon anyway in quiet time....so...yeah. I gave it a try.

I thought it was a very useful resource. It broke down a lot of the prophecies in small easy to digest chunks. As a result, I got a lot out of this study of Daniel. I'm psyched about that. The author got a little preachy about alcohol a few times and about how the government is going to the dogs, but, I found it amusing. Not a deal breaker.

3-3.5. I read this as a companion to studying and leading a study of Daniel. I liked that it was easy to read and understand. However, McGee had his own agenda in a few places that were not directly linked to the text that I struggled with. One example is his soap box of how alcohol destroys countries and is going to destroy America (mentioned several times in the book). He first talked about it in the chapter where King Belshazzar sees the writing on the wall during a great feast (where alcohol is being consumed) and that night loses his throne. No where in the text does it say that God took the throne from Belshazzar because he was consuming great amounts of alcohol. I struggled with these side commentaries where the authors opinion was more prominent than his interpretation of the text.

One of the most important and interesting books of the Bible is the segment written by Daniel the prophet in the Old Testament. However, some parts of it (most notably chapter 11) are difficult to understand. This is where Dr. McGee excels. Well known through his 5 year "Thru The Bible" radio program, McGee explains hard passages in an easy yet knowledgeable way. Well worth the investment of your book-buying dollars.

A wonderful parallel to support the reading of Daniel in the Bible

This opened my mind with great clarity and depth when studying the Book of Daniel in a men’s study class. Without resorting to this book many important facts and segments would not have been available.

McGee is very easy to read and very accurately presents a concise interpretation off each passage. This is a great resource for those just starting out with commentaries for bible study. He gives easily digestible illustrations and keeps it very simple. If he chases a rabbit it is always relevant even if a touch preachy. A very sound source which is useful to the beginning student and the master scholar.

Wonderful explanation of the book of Daniel. I was disappointed in the the explanations of the last couple of chapters--far less detail. Of course it is eschatalogical. Perhaps McGee didn't have any more explanations for those chapters? However I really appreciated the history of the events that have already occurred.

Greatly informatve!

This author is thorough but admits when he does not know all the answers. He gives many references to other authors which I find very helpful.
