These are the best travel guides on the market. I have now worked out our must sees and maybes while in France. Love the overview of history as well. Detailed enough without being laboured

I have always held Michelin to be one of the best travel guides on the market. Am, however, just about ready to move one. Their 2011 and 2012 editions (at least for Germany and France) desperately need the attention of an editor. Purchased this book to get some ideas for a trip to France. This book is all but useless for that purpose, as there is just not enough depth and the indeces have been slimmed down dramatically, meaning that sites listed as side trips from other locations frequently cannot be found without reading the entire book. O example: Giverny (Normandy), home of Claude Monet's home and gardens (think ponds, lily pads, ...) does not even get a mention. Realize that the local/regional guides are available, but I would expect a site such as Giverny to at least merit mention (if only the "sales pitch" of: see Normandy guide for further detail). May still take a look at the regional (e.g., Brittany, Normandy) guides, but will not purchase another country guide. In the meantime, I would like my EUR20 back...

Having used many travel guides in the past. the Michelin Green Guides are now my go to guide when planning a trip. Their ratings (Interesting, 1*, 2*, 3*) are an accurate way of planning what to see and where to go. The descriptions of places are informative but concise.
As importantly, unlike online sites which either work off commission or can be gamed by bots, Michelin's brand gives confidence that the views about locations are independent and unbiased.
We never start a trip without consulting a Michelin Guide.

This is the classic book for people planning a trip to France. Even though I have been there many times, I like to keep my library collection of all things French as up to date as possible. Michelin also publishes a very wonderful Red Guide, but it is in French and that can be a challenge for English-only speakers.
