The book recounts, from an Indian passengers viewpoint, the final hours of the British India Steam Navigation Company ship Dara. The Dara sank in the Arabian Gulf on 8th April 1961 after a terrorist bomb exploded on board and resulted in the death of 238 passengers and crew.
This non fiction story deals with what happened when a bomb exploded onboard the British India Company ship Dara in the Persian Gulf on 8th April 1961. The subsequent fire, abandoning of the ship and rescue efforts.
The first part of the book, which deals with the disaster as it unfolds from the author's personal experience was rivetting, if harrowing. For me particularly as my father Charles Alexander was the 2nd officer on board. Regretably, he is no longer around to discuss this account with.
The second part of the book details the inquiry in London a year later. Hence by nature it is much drier, though again very interesting in parts, for instance, the description of how the unberthed passengers lived on board is fascinating. Also the part where Captain Elson is being questioned about ethnic tensions between Arab and Indian passengers, where he relates how a friend of his was left chairbound and paralysed after being stabbed in such an incident which left 3 crew dead.
This book is most suitable for those, like myself, with a personal interest in the story or those who have a special interest in disasters at sea.
