Bride of the Harvest Wolf: Episode Two

Rate this book
Be careful what you wish for, because magic is always two parts wondrous, one part cruel.

The Spirit Guardians have just granted reckless wild-child Sienna Kendrick the secret desire of her heart—an adventure outside the town walls of Zurent. There’s just one catch; they’ve also selected her as the thirty-sixth bride of the Harvest Wolf. A role some regard as an honor, and others a death sentence. Now this plucky hunter’s daughter will have to undertake a journey into the woods, where nightmares she has spent cycles trying to forget prowl the dark shadows.

The selection has been made, the journey through the woods has begun, but will Sienna even make it to the Palace of Eternal Autumn alive?

Neurodivergent storyteller Kat Vancil crafts stories about boys who kiss boys. Some take place on spacecraft racing through a sea of distant stars. Others take place in lush urban sprawls rich with the spices of a thousand far-off places that exist only in her mind. While still others take place in the halls of a coastal city high school that is and isn’t like any other in America.

Over the last 12 years she’s done work for Amazon and Writer’s Digest, had her work sold in bookstores across the English-speaking world, and won an Ippy award for excellence in independent publishing.

She currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband, their kitty studio-mate Akimi & eight overfull bookcases. And when not crafting fantastical tales of dragokin and Valkyries, Kat can usually be found frolicking in general geekiness.

Better than the first - Looking forward to more
5/5 Stars: Action! Horror! Wtf?!

This book opens when the story is getting good. The character is doomed, all her friends and family are mourning her like she's just been sentenced to death (oh wait, she has), and now she's off to go face her doom, even though she thought this is what she wanted. Doom doom doomy-doom.

The characters are more sympathetic in this one than the first (mainly because we're given more time with them and can see their motivations), and except for some important introduction and world building that happened in the first book, I'd almost wish this was the first one in the series.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the first one. But, what's done is done, and I look forward to the next one.

The story is not a break-neck thriller, nor is it a noir mystery, nor really is it a bodice-ripping romance. Kat once again defies standard conventions to bring a story that has elements of all of them, to weave them together into an engaging story in a new, wholly unexplored world.
If her previous offerings are anything to go by, I look forward to betrayal, thrills, and genuine heartfelt moments.
