3.75 stars - Burt Nanus’ leadership book was filled with many nuggets in the exploration of the concept of vision. I was mining this book for key ideas and insights into the creation and development of organizational vision. Although I did not find all the practical methodology in forming a personal/professional/organizational vision, I did discover many valuable glimpses into this ambiguous process.

The downside of this volume for me was the example used to demonstrate vision development, Prime Pet Foods. I had a rather difficult time related to the organizational needs and marketplace of the pet food business. On the other hand, I did soak up the theoretical and philosophical constructs that he presented on the critical values of vision creation and transformation. Some of his other examples reflected the copyright date of 1992, but don’t dismiss the book based the older date of publication. If you do you might miss some gems that will challenge your mental model of leadership and your pragmatic application of leadership in your organization.

While this book is geared toward business leaders in helping them discover a vision, I found the book very helpful and insightful in the process that it develops that enables a group to discover their vision. The book focuses less on WHY vision is important and more on HOW to discover and articulate an organizations vision. If you're interested in the topic of vision, this is a must read.

All of the examples were about companies that sell pet food. If you are distracted by Alpo, a book about visionary leadership is probably not the place to start.
