With these extraordinary short stories, one of Ireland’s acclaimed theatre writers ranges her eye across the attic rooms and public bars of Belfast to the remote snow covered streets of European towns and the desperate heat of the Middle East. 11 tales of broken love and misplaced loyalty, always contemplating the consequences of our human acts. Funny, scabrous, sacred and profane Rosemary Jenkinson second collection since 2004 is a welcome addition to her reputation as one of the sharpest contemporary writers around.
Rosemary Jenkinson is awesome. And after hearing her speak, it's hard to associate her with this collection of short stories, but it just shows what an excellent writer she is. My favourite stories were Scenes from an Empty Attic, Marie=Finbar, Poronin, Silent Giving & Aphrodite's Kiss. I love how she writes about love and sex the most (obvs). Although, as a foreigner, I felt a little lost when it came to the Belfast stories. Sometimes she gets wrapped up in the most beautiful prose, it's hard to know what's going on. Looking forward to seeing what she writes next!
