Images of America: New Hampshire

Mt. Washington Auto Road

Reaching more than a mile in the sky and acting as the crown of the Presidential Range, Mount Washington and the Mt. Washington Auto Road have been luring and challenging adventure seekers on foot, on bicycles, or in race cars for over 150 years. The Mt. Washington Auto Road was opened to the public in 1861 and has remained in continuous operation ever since--making this the nation's first man-made attraction. Located in the heart of New Hampshire's White Mountains, the Mt. Washington Auto Road has witnessed the evolution of transportation from mountain wagons drawn by six-horse teams to the modern cars of today. Mt. Washington Auto Road documents the history of this eight-mile path to the summit of the Northeast's highest peak.

The greatest challenge to writing an Images of America book is creating a narrative flow. While technically pictorial histories, the books do lend themselves to being more illustrated narrative than "picture book" if approached properly by the author. Steven Caming has done a wonderful job of achieving the former through a singular tactic.

Each Images of America book grows from formulaic instructions; they're what give the series their familiarity. Each image size has a maximum word count. That said, there is the option to write one caption for both images on a page (if there are two images on a page). The author uses this strategy throughout, and it has a surprising effect, the creation of a cohesive narrative tale.

As for the content, it couldn't be better suited for the series, which is positioned to capture a period capturing the earliest days of photography to the middle of the twentieth century. The story of people attempting to conquer Mt. Washington on wheels goes back to the stagecoach days, some of which are captured here in static images. The author progresses us from horse drawn wagons to horseless carriages and beyond. He explores the mountaintop hotels, the well-known weather observatory and more.

The author couldn't be more well suited for the job, as the former media director for the Mt. Washington Auto Road. He knows the story better than most, and shares it here with us.
