Scritto dall'autore del restauro (durato 14 anni) degli affreschi di Michelangelo nella Cappella Sistina. Dopo più di quattro secoli gli affreschi della Sistina erano diventati difficilmente intelligibili, coperti da una spessa patina fuligginosa dovuta a vari fattori, e il restauro portò a una vera e propria riscoperta. Le critiche furono molte, soprattutto da parte di chi aveva imparato e interpretato gli affreschi di Michelangelo come se fossero stati diretta espressione del carattere dell'artista, ombroso e pessimista. Invece sotto quel velo si celavano colori eccezionali, uno stile brillante, luci e ombre interpretati con una tecnica rivoluzionaria. Si gridò allo scandalo, alla distruzione, ma Colalucci che è vissuto per anni a pochi centimetri dal lavoro del Maestro ci spiega con quale attenzione e rispetto ha lavorato agli affreschi, mai forzando la mano ma cercando sempre di restituire il vero. Il libro è molto interessante per come viene raccontata la progressiva riscoperta di Michelangelo, per la descrizione delle tecniche di restauro, per come viene raccontato tutto il mondo che orbitava intorno a questa impresa epocale. Colalucci è un uomo semplice e ci racconta come in un paio di occasioni è andato in crisi di fronte all'enorme responsabilità di cui si stava prendendo carico, come quando è arrivato a lavorare sulle mani di Adamo e di Dio nella volta oppure sul volto di Cristo nel Giudizio Universale. Il libro non è un trattato scientifico ma è un'opera divulgativa.

Loved loved loved this book so much. My only complaint would be there are not enough pictures to accompany this well written, surprising story about an unique work of art.
