High camp value. Pink gingham ceiling in Southampton? Check. Tiny Anderson Cooper? Check. I loved looking through her enormous glasses in the how-to photos. (They do not appear in her majestic dust-jacket portrait.) My favorite collage is the bedroom floor covered in hundreds of pieces of fabric, cut precisely to prevent overlap, and painted with "many coats of varnish." Who can tell me how that extremely labor-intensive project held up?
I was searching my library system's online catalog for books on collage. That's how I came across this. The cover piqued my curiosity: a whimsical portrait, light and airy, surrounded by the lavender color of the book's jacket. It drew me in. Her art and writing both have a timeless charm and appeal. My favorite thing was a photo of her Southampton sitting room: lavender gingham on the walls and ceiling, white wicker furniture, and a sisal floor covering. At first glance I thought it was a dollhouse interior.
