The headlines blared 'DNA Breakthrough! Humanity controls own evolution." Some yearn to be more than they are, to be smarter, stronger, faster. They alter their bodies and even their DNA to fit into a world they feel has left them behind. Wyatt isn't one of them, he's mostly happy with who he is, a track star, a chess wiz and a bit of a loner.
His simple and ordered life is upended when secrets hidden in his genes make him a hunted man. On the run, he needs to figure out who has been manipulating him and why. He has no idea who to fear most - the unhinged hacker, the shoe-obsessed psychopath, or the gang of body-altering bikers. Can Wyatt adapt to his strange new world fast enough to survive?
Catalyst stands alone, but if you enjoy it, Betrayal, the second book in the Altered series by Blou Bryant is available in the Amazon store. Watch for Revolution in Winter, 2017.

Catalyst by Blou Bryant. Wyatt Millar's world is upended when secrets hidden in his genes make him a hunted man. On the run, he needs to figure out who has been manipulating him and why. He has no idea who to fear most - the unhinged hacker, the shoe-obsessed psychopath, or the gang of body-altering bikers.
The life of a strange young woman lies in the balance. Can Wyatt adapt to this fantastic and strange new world fast enough to survive? This was a slow but ok read. I couldn't get Into it but I read it. 3*
Publishers Description: In the not-too-distant future, society is even more divided than it is now and the ‘new economy’ has left most of us behind. The world has been changed and people look to change themselves. Tattoos and piercings are visible examples while the use of drugs, DNA therapy and surgery to alter ourselves becomes common.
Review: This was a damn good read. The storyline was excellent. It starts as a rendition of some high school angst novella and quickly transforms into a high octane SciFi thriller with bold characterization and fast paced action. Wyatt is kind of a jock-douche that has the hots for Jessica and with the help of his buddy, Ford, he sets out to finally meet the girl of his dreams. Only she is more like a nightmare on acid and Ford becomes something other than what was commonly believed.
Like most of the supporting characters, the villain is drawn wonderfully, so much so that you come to like her. The characters developed with perfect timing along with the movement which is not an easy thing to do. Visualization of the scenes were a snap as the descriptions were concise enough to allow your imagination to fill it in. This kept the novel focused on the characters while building a surround from your own perspective. Very brilliant writing.
“SO WHY YOU NO GIVE 5 STARS!!!”. Sadly there were just too many grammatical errors to ignore. So much so, that some of the sentences were fractured beyond repair. This really detracted from the intensity of the novel. Still, very high marks from this stingy reviewer. There is a new talent in town and his name is Blou…..er Blue, Blow?
This book was a frustrating read for me. I didn't like any of the main characters although, partway through the book, I finally connected with Wyatt. The one character I did like is a secondary character, a little girl named Teri, who I think is on her way to becoming a very interesting character as this series moves forward. Wyatt is a quiet, nerdy-kind of guy who's shy around the girls and not to sure of himself in what is described as the near future of Chicago. He invites his best friend, Ford (who is missing an arm) to a typical high school party. As it turns out, it is anything but typical. He and Ford come upon Jessica, the popular queen of HS having an argument with the guy she was with. They think they are rescuing her when in reality, she shoots the "boyfriend" and kidnaps Wyatt and Ford. From then on, it's a race to Detroit and then to a military base. Along the way, there is multiple encounters with the police who are now owned by a corporation run by the rich. The CEO is, of course, Jessica's father. And the pretty queen, who thinks everyone should bow to her, uses the police and her father's position to do whatever she wants. Her mistake? Thinking that weak minded, addled brained Wyatt will do her bidding. Wyatt has a social conscious and wants to do the right thing and it doesn't include murdering people and using others to get something that isn't yours to begin with. He manages to escape and along with new friends manages to find out what is really going on. While I wasn't enamoured with the book and it's main characters, by the end, I liked it more and am willing to continue reading the series. This book will appeal to those who love action/adventure. It is non-stop from beginning to end. It will also appeal to those who like sci-fi and thrillers. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book from eBookDiscovery. My opinions are my own.
Blou Bryant has produced one of the most unusual, yet gripping thrillers I have ever read. Each new page brings a shocking new discovery, with every piece of the puzzle leaving more questions. I was filled with relief each time I thought I’d finally figured out what was happening, only to have that thought quashed within the next minute of reading. The unexpected introduction of American Sign Language (with a twist) was a real treat, as ASL is my communication language. With the adrenaline-pumping action continuing throughout most of the book, the identity of Joe was a constant question mark. I very much enjoyed Catalyst: A Red Dog Thriller and recommend this book mature readers who enjoy great stories that leave you on the edge of your seat, delivered at a heart-pumping, fast pace and which are flavored with a touch of humor, paranormal and sci-fi adventure.
I loved the book. Fresh, exciting and a quick read. I am looking forward to the sequels. I understand they will be out in quick succession. That is refreshing. If you ever read the wheel of time series or storm light series you will understand.
