Ironically, I started reading this novel late in the evening on the 30th anniversary of the Challenger space shuttle disaster. In preparation for my role as astronaut Judith Resnik in an upcoming fringe theatre production of the before, during and after of the tragedy, I used this book to help discover Judy's personal life beyond that of her professional career.
Judy herself was a very private individual, but Bernstein and Blue were able to unveil more intimate details of her childhood years, her college days and the fire behind Judy's dreams and achievements. I unlocked a surprising number of similarities between Judy and myself including growing up in Ohio, family life, a love for science and playing the piano.
The book reads with historical accuracy and scientific clarity. I have uncovered a number of the same things about Judy Resnik's life and the Challenger explosion through my collaborative research. Overall, Judy was a dedicated, driven, kind individual whose Jewish heritage and feminist ideals were important to her, but did not define her. She was, first and foremost, someone who reached for the stars...an astronaut.
