This is a great little book that I picked up at the college library sale back in 2000. I had read bits a pieces of it before, but to the best of my recollection, I had not read it from beginning to end. There is a sense in which this book is out of date. There have been a ton of books produced since this one and that means it is inadequate to do the job of telling ministers about the best books if they have been produced in the last 35 years. Still, it is very interesting to see what “turned the crank” for Wilbur Smith back in the day. There are some very good suggestions here of some works that are still readily accessible. I would do well to hunt them up and read a good number of them.
I suppose the abiding value of this book for me is to show the depth of Smith’s scholarship and let that be a spur for me. Honestly, I don’t think I read enough, even though I have good number of books. I think that I am cheating myself by not applying myself more diligently.
It is also interesting to see the love that Smith has for books. That should serve as an incentive for me as well. If one of the hopes which Smith had was to make better students of those that read this volume, he has achieved it with me.
