Delightful, simply delightful. Jacquie Rogers has hit something with Hot Work in Fry Pan Gulch, her new series. Written in the first person, we follow Honey Beaulieu in her quest to find her path in life. From daughter of a madam to deputy of the local sheriff to bounty hunter, Honey sure kicks up some dust. This book is filled with double entendres and colorful language that will no doubt make you roll on the floor laughing. As with any books (at least of those I’ve read so far) by Ms. Rogers, my word of advice is: Do not drink while reading on pain of choking.
Loved this book. Honey was funny, independent and aspiring. Her mix matched entourage of animals and people never let the story lose its magic. Provided by author as an ARC.
Hot Work in Fry Pan Gulch is a fantastic story. It is a great women’s fiction coming of age story set in the Old West with a powerful female lead that takes no nonsense from anyone, but manages to maintain a great heart throughout. The story is written in first person and you can almost hear Honey’s drawl as you read.
As you can tell from the snippet, there is some language in the novel and some topics within are pretty heavy but since Honey grew up in a pretty interesting situation, she manages to look at all of life with this wonderful salt of the earth outlook. If you are looking for a great female lead character with western salt and pepper, please give Honey Beaulieu a few hours of your time. She is worth it.
A great story, I highly recommend. I received this book free for an honest review, which I have given.
This is my first book by this author but won't be my last! Hot Work in Fry Pan Gulch is the first in this series but I hope there will be plenty more! Honey is a refreshing bright quirky "tell it like it is" character with a big heart. This book gives a new view into the Wild West and as someone raised on westerns it is fun to see a woman character in this role....one I have dreamed of as a child riding my mom's broom through the house, planning new adventures! Fun, quirky and totally absorbing, this book has everything! Thank you Ms. Rogers!
This is another of Jacquie Rogers stories that makes a bad day a lot better. It has a good hearted madam, a lazy sheriff, and a whole host of animals that make you smile. Honey does the lazy sheriff's job and decide s that she can make a bunch more money doing bounty hunting than being a deputy and starts out with her donkey Sassy and a big mule that has to have a pickle before you ride him. You need to read this book just to see what Honey and her friends are up to. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
Oh me, oh my, I've never read a book quite like this before. It's like no Western I've ever read. It's funny! I love the quirks and sarcasm in here. I love the characters, good and bad, and Honey is the best. Her Mama is the madam of the Tasty Chicken but that's not for Honey. She ends up with what we'd call an office job at the jail, then she becomes a deputy. She's the best shootin' woman around, she has a pet donkey that follows her around and a mule nobody else can ride. I enjoyed every bit of this book and couldn't help but laugh out loud while reading it. I won the book in a contest and I'm just tickled pink about it!
Wow I loved this story and can't wait to catch up in the next one it's comical and makes you laugh Honey Beaulieu has so much character that you have love her as for Sassy and Pickles they are hilarious the trio make up a rather quirky bunch and Honey obviously wants to broaden her horizons and become a bounty hunter this will will probably find out in the next installment of Honey Beaulieu 5 Stars and worth every darn one
I was given this book for a true and honest review. This book had me giggling all the way through! I love the character of Honey Beaulieu! It was refreshing to read a western book where the real "hero" of the story is a feisty female!! This was an easy read and can't wait to read the next book! Highly recommend if you want a quick, feel-good read!
Move over Calamity Jane, Annie Oakley and Hallie Stillwell. Here comes Honey Beaulieu, Man Hunter. From the title of the book, Hot Work in Fry Pan Gulch, on the cover to the last page you will laugh, guffaw, chortle and give out big belly laughs! If you read it in public, you might notice a few strange looks, so beware. Tears streamed down my face a few times as I followed the antics of Honey, Sassy and Pickles along with the various other characters she became involved with and I was a little uncomfortable at the reactions to strangers around me. Jacquie Rogers has started a new, absolutely hilarious, series about a gutsy, spirited “law person” (aka “bounty hunter”). She is Honey Beaulieu, Man Hunter, daughter of a madam and a bounty hunter. In this first book, she begins her law enforcement career by going after her first bounty. More interested in the bounty than the law, Honey chases down Ed Roxbury so she can acquire enough money to buy a house and to support a donkey and a mule that adopted her. Of course, certain events intervene to make her put personal dreams aside. I won’t tell anything about them since that would spoil a lot of your fun. Oh, I will mention, in passing, that she has a ghost with a sense of humor that floats in and out of her life - usually out when she needs him and in when she doesn’t, in her opinion. But, reading between the lines, he considers himself to be there at the right time. And I cannot forget to tell you that there is also romance in Fry Pan Gulch (no not the bordello type) in the person of Sam Lancaster, U.S. Marshal. I have read several books that purported to be funny and they did elicit a couple of chuckles from me, but Honey’s escapades are much, much funnier and elicit more than a chuckle. Join me in reading the whole series (I hope Jacquie can write fast enough for us). And don’t forget, when you read a book (any book) write a review and publish it online. Jacquie Rogers lives in Seattle with her husband. She comes from Owyhee County, Idaho where many of her stories are set and was a real farm girl. She is a member of Western Fictioneers. Check her out on the Internet – she is so prolific even on the net, it is easier to just go to your favorite search engine and type in her name. She also teaches online courses in writing.
Told in first person from a girl raised in a whorehouse without much education, the vernacular took a few pages to get used to, but even words and phrases that were completely unfamiliar to me were easy to understand in context. Just in case, the author included a glossary of some terms. It made the book so much more fun hearing it in her own language. So many crazy things happen, yet Honey takes them all in stride as if they were everyday occurrences.
The characters were so fun, almost caricatures, and it works wonderfully. The story is full of surprises, and moves along at a great pace. If I hadn’t had to stop several times because I was laughing so hard, I could have finished this fantastic book in a day. I highly recommend this book to everyone age 15+ but only because some of the situations might give parents pause. There are some great, not-so-subtly hidden social messages and a strong, skillful, motivated female main character.
I have received this book free in exchange for an honest review.
If you enjoy westerns and humor, then this is the book for you. Honey Beaulieu is full of grit, determination and sass—I guarantee you’ll fall in love with her. Growing up in a whorehouse owned by her mama, Honey is determined to not pursue the same line of work. Fortunately, her pa makes a living hunting bounties, and Honey shows a particular knack for it. She lands a job as Fry Pan Gulch’s deputy marshal, much to the chagrin of the men around her. You’ll cheer her on as she sets out to prove she has what it takes. When she meets handsome U.S. deputy marshal Sam Lancaster, a stubborn mule and a pickle barrel will have you laughing out loud. Ms. Rogers is one of the best western writers out there today and this book proves her talent once again. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Honey Beaulieu is quite a character. Raised in her mama's whorehouse, she's a scrawny little thing and not suited to the occupation. Her mouth and her guns get her promoted to deputy Marshall, but what she really wants to do is hunt down scoundrels and varmints for the rewards.
Honey can shoot, ride, swear, and out think just about anybody. She and her mule Sassy are quite a pair. Why Honey could (almost) charm the pants off a U.S. Deputy Marshall.
What do you get when you have a girl raised in a whore house who's a sharp shooter like her bounty hunter father. Add in a Bustle biting donkey, and a bread and butter pickle eating racing mule.... You get Hot Mess In Fry Pan Gulch. Get ready for action, adventure, a ghost and maybe love? This is the first in a series of books that are mentioned in Jacquie Rogers Hearts of Owyhee series they are the Honey Beaulieu dime store novels... Another winner by Jacquie Rogers!
I really enjoyed reading this book. I love a good tricky western and Honey is all that and more. With her pals, a mule and a donkey, she just manages to keep a step ahead of trouble. Or is it a half step! She manages to do more for the town than the crazy marshal who would rather visit the Tasty Chicken, Honey's mother's whorehouse. I can't wait to follow Honey on her next adventure, and possibly falling for a certain U.S. Marshal. Waiting patiently for a follow-up.
Love love love this book. I smiled and laughed the whole way through. How can you not love Honey ? She's tough as hell with a heart like a marshmallow. What a colorful and wonderful group of characters. This is a one of a kind feel good book. Can't wait to see what kind of craziness Honey gets herself into next. I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.
Great book! This book was so much fun to read! I truly loved it. Honey Beaulieu has so much spunk and grit. I look forward to reading more of her adventures.
