The Match
Medical student Kate Deming isn’t sure her marriage will survive till graduation. She hasn’t seen her husband or daughters in days, and her reclusive sister has stopped answering her calls. The turf war between the gangs and the mafia has made this Chicago’s deadliest winter on record, and every case that rolls into the emergency department is worse than the last. Kate recognizes the danger in her supervisor’s smile, but she’s so lonely she may just take him up on it anyway. When the CEO of the hospital dies in front of her, Kate reaches out to his widow. But the murdered man is not what he seemed, and Kate’s own sister is trapped in his web of lies. Will Kate be able to extricate her sister before the killer comes back to finish what he started? The Match is the first book in the Kate Deming Suspense series.

If you've ever wondered about the exhaustion of medical school, or wonder what type of smarts, commitment and insane person works to get through it, wonder no more, and enter, "Hi, I'm Kate. Deming. I'm a medical student," world. The mother of two, happily wed, working long shifts at a Chicago hospital waiting for her "Match" to find out where she will complete her residency is just the "basic" conflict of this book.
In The Match, Kate will fight Chicago's brutal weather, attraction to another doctor, the Russian mafia, her estranged sister, her in laws, her husband and irresistible daughters, and patient care that is a downright an assault on Kate.
So real, so poignant, and a bit disturbing...The Match is in pace with Dean Koontz's Your Heart Belongs to Me. Fans of Tess Gerritsen will love this book.

This is the first of the Kate Deming series in which Kate, a medical student in her last year, finds her life complicated by factors that many could easily relate to---possibly aside from the murder and kidnappings. Kate is an older student, married with two daughters, who begins to wonder if she might stray from that part of her life. She has a less responsible, often non-communicative sister, who is a pregnant doctoral candidate with a wealthy boyfriend who is murdered. The sister seeks Kate's help, and an engrossing series of events kept me reading to the end and wondering what the sequel would bring in Kate's life.

Just ok
It took a long time for the story to develop. The excitement was very short lived, and the author clearly wants you to think it didn't end. Overall it was fine, but I can't convince myself to read any more in this series. Even if they were free too.

Good to the very end
Medical thriller. The tensions and fatigue of medical training are so authentic. Looking forward to Kate in residency. So Chicago!

Emergency Medicine gets all too personal for Chicago medical resident Kate Deming when she treats a prominent murder victim whose ties with organized crime land him in the hospital's emergency department. After Kate discovers her sister is the police's chief suspect in the man's death and the real killers' next target, she embarks on a desperate crusade to save her sister and prove her innocence. Kate's husband's frustration at her long hours at the hospital that leave him with the main responsibility for their two children, and his disapproval of her efforts to help her sister, fuel the tension surrounding Kate's decision on her "Match" choices that will decide whether she leaves Chicago for the next stage of her career. Kate's dangerous attraction to Dr. Jack Fischer, her residency supervisor, troubles her as she embarks on a desperate attempt to save her sister, an attempt that challenges her courage and medical skills and puts her life in jeopardy.
Author Ann Dominguez's fast-paced novel takes us into the brutally real world of a medical resident's life in the demanding world of emergency medicine. Her fresh writing and all-so-real details of an emergency medicine department kept me riveted up to the last page! Looking forward to the sequel!
