Nancymarie Howard Fortunato Phillips' students excel in their career disciplines. As a Professor and Director of Perioperative Education at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, Ohio, she teaches Perioperative Nurses, Registered Nurse First Assistants, and Surgical Technologists. Her graduates are highly sought by recruiters and hospitals in the area.

Dr. Phillips designs and produces all of the programs she teaches. She started the department she directs in 1999. Since that time she has expanded her program development and teaching to include many programs that range from 2-yr degree professions, to 1-semester nursing courses, to specialized 5-day intensive formats for expanded role perioperative nurses. Dr. Phillips has hosted registered nurses from as far away as Washington State for specialized nursing courses. She mentors many nurses in the community as they seek advanced degrees in nursing. Fledgling educators always have an opportunity to present classes and learn to teach in her department under her direction. Many of her graduates in nursing and surgical technology have returned to work for her. Over 25% of her surgical technology students return to college for professional nursing degrees within 3 years of graduation from the surgical technology program. Registered nurses who have completed her programs have gone on to attain advanced degrees as educators and nurse practitioners.

Dr. Phillips has been a perioperative nurse since 1975. She began her career as an LPN in the OR and attained her RN from Lakeland Community College in 1981. Her Baccalaureate Degrees in Health Services Management and Nursing are from Ursuline College in Pepper Pike, Ohio. Her Masters Degree in Adult Education and Development is from Cleveland State where she earned her PhD in Education. Dr. Phillips is the three-time recipient of the C. Joan Gowin Merit Scholarship. In 2006, she was awarded the AORN Clinical Nursing Education Award and the Excellence in Teaching award from the Lakeland Foundation. She was featured in Ohio Magazine for teaching excellence in December, 2006. In 2009, Dr. Phillips was awarded the Virginia Olsavsky Mentorship award from Sigma Theta Tau, Iota Psi chapter.

Phillips is certified in perioperative nursing and is credentialed as a registered nurse first assistant by the Ohio State Board of Nursing. Her professional activities include local and national committee work with AORN and the Competency and Credentialing Institute. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society where she serves as a member of the Distinguished Author Mentorship group. Dr. Phillips has authored many articles, textbooks, and chapters in major texts for other authors. Forthcoming new books include a study guide for surgical technology and a text on surgical pharmacology.

Her recent research in feminist studies examines historic views of girl's education in convent settings and international views of the sociologic quest for adoration that results in an adoration-abuse cycle.
