An excellent WWII adventure novel. Not long after Pearl Harbor, many ships carrying thousands of refugees are bottled up in enemy waters. If a remote Japanese torpedo boat base can be destroyed, then the ships can make a night run and reach Australia.

The quickly organized, makeshift operation to destroy the base includes two commandos helped by the wife of a recently-killed coast watcher, an alcoholic pilot with a beat-up seaplane and a civilian sailor who escaped from the base. The mission is made more difficult by the fact that the leader of the commandos wants to simply blow up the base and not worry about the 20 or so prisoners being held there (figuring its more important to help out those several thousand refugees. But the sailor, whose help and inside information is vital, insists that the prisoners be rescued as well. The commando and the sailor quickly come to hate each other, but have to work together to accomplish anything at all.

The novel is atmospheric and full of truly exciting action scenes, with the scenes between the action literally dripping with suspense. The characters are all well-drawn and are given fully fleshed personalities. A great book in every way.

Well, it was an easy read adventure story and that was pretty much it. I think I could have predicted who would not make it once we'd been introduced to the full cast but there was a minimum of sickening violence and at least two of the women were smart and capable rather than attractive hindrances.

And I mention that it was a quick read?
