Delightful story about Billy Goat who leaves home when he finds out the farmer wants to have him for dinner. In Billy Goat's travels he meets a pig, a goose, a lamb and a rooster. Together they make a home and protect one another when their neighbor's the wolves come visiting.
Nonny Hogrogian is an Armenian-American writer and illustrator, known best for children's picture books. She has won two annual Caldecott Medals for U.S. children's book illustrations. Since childhood she prefers folk and fairy tales, poetry, fantasy and stories.
While I am a fan of Nonny Hogrogian and like illustrations of this title they are very pale in color in this title. However, in no 1972 the intense color we see in picture books was not present then. I really liked the cumulative take of these animals going together to save themselves. Storyline reminded me of the Bremen Town musicians. An oldie, but goodie for me.
This was an odd little story about animals who have been fattened for the kill, but run away to form their own community before they can be eaten. The artwork is better than the text, though I could see the story being appealing to families who object to eating meat.
