This volume tells the story of two cultural groups: Afro-Hispanics, whose ancestors came to Panama as African slaves, and West Indians from the English-speaking countries of Jamaica and Barbados who arrived during the mid-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries to build the railroad and the Panama Canal.


While Afro-Hispanics assimilated after centuries of mestizaje (race mixing) and now identify with their Spanish heritage, West Indians hold to their British Caribbean roots and identify more closely with Africa and the Caribbean.


By examining the writing of black Panamanian authors, Sonja Watson highlights how race is defined, contested, and inscribed in Panama. She discusses the cultural, racial, and national tensions that prevent these two groups from forging a shared Afro-Panamanian identity, ultimately revealing why ethnically diverse Afro-descendant populations continue to struggle to create racial unity in nations across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Esta era una lectura que tenía postergada, pero a la cual le hice lectura en el momento justo y apropiado.

La doctora Stephenson Watson hizo un excelente trabajo de análisis y de investigación sobre lo que fue, es y podría ser la literatura afrodescendiente en Panamana desde la discordia entre la afrocolonialidad, la anfroantillanidad y, lo que hoy converge en afropanameñidad.

Del 2014 para acá, las nuevas generaciones han ido cambiando el discurso y reapropiándose de su identidad para denunciar entre letras, lo que significa ser negro o negra en es país.

Definitivamente otra de las razones claves que denuncia la autora es el poco reconocimiento que Panamá le ha dado al valor identitario de nuestros escritores afro.

Reitero mi posición de que, en Panamá, pocas personas son capaces de nombrarme hasta 5 escritores de origen afrodescendiente, porque producto a la democracia racial (así lo denuncia la autora), era innecesario.

Y es así como muchos de nuestros personajes históricos y próceres de la patria son ocultados desdd el silencio.
