The weight of this responsibility on a young girl is sometime too much to bear, but Llianna travels far and wide to find answers, and in the process learns how to accept her Fate and dance gracefully with her power, all the while moving ever closer to facing the Darkness that threatens her land.
I love this book, I love Kellianna's song "Warrior Queen". This is the pre-story of Lilianna's life path. This is an amazing story of a young woman's journey into a full grown Warrior Queen. The questions she asks regarding the prophecy being wispered about her in the Castle stronghold go unanswered. The reply is " when it is your time". Her friends and family surround her with the love and strength to face the prophecy bravely as a true Queen would. Eagerly awaiting book two of this series. Hope we don't have to wait too long... This is such an excellent book.
Third time trying to do this review - first two efforts were lost! Okay. First, a disclaimer: Kellianna is a friend of mine. I bought this book last year when it came out, in support of her, but did not read it until this February. I was worried that it may not be up to my standards, or taste. I haven't read much fantasy as an adult, beyond Harry Potter et al, and often feel like I could be doing something more productive with my time.(I mean, I am already vilified for not being a a fan of LOTR/Tolkien or GoT/Martin) But--Never fear! This book is thoroughly engaging. Whew!
I started off speed-reading, just so's I could speak of the work to the author. I skimmed through the difficult-to-pronounce, Norse-inspired names. Within the first twenty or so pages, I had slowed my roll and was reading every word. (I do wish there was a pronunciation key in the book, though!)
I knew a bit of the Warrior Queen's tale, from songs written and recorded by author, Kellianna. But how would it translate into a novel? A series, even? Very well, it turns out.
We meet the titular Warrior Queen as a young girl of twelve. Lliana is the daughter of a king, one of several in a feudal style conglomerate of townships ultimately controlled and influenced by a ruling class of religious men, who abide no sorcery in their lands. That has been the way for many generations, and now Llianna is at an age where she must be tested. If the magical heritage from her matriarchal lineage is discovered, she will be ousted or even executed.
Lliana's journey began before her birth, when the king married the strange island woman that was her mother. Died in childbirth, Lliana doesn't know the power passed down, that lives inside of her, until she is faced with loss, trauma, and the possibility of death. I'm afraid to give anything away, so let me just say, the story is engrossing.
These are deft writers. I felt comfortable in their hands early on in the book, confident at their ability to deliver a complex and well-thought out story. The characters are credible, evocative, and relateable, despite being in an unknown time and land. The story has many facets, all of which I eagerly embraced, caught by surprise at the depth of story and character presented. I felt emotions - which, honestly, I don't often do - and had trouble putting the book down.
I look forward to the next installment, and I highly recommend reading this book!
I received this book as a goodreads giveaway. I had no knowledge of the song that inspired this until I read the intro. The song is lovely and I’m genuinely curious what the story will be that brings Liiana to that point. But not so intrigued that I’m seeking out book two. The book very much felt like part out of a multiparter. It stands ok on its own, but not great. 3.5 stars overall.
having know the song the book was based on i was excited to see how the story went and was not disappionted. The characters were well introduced and developed. just has the book had reached can't put down it came to an end but lucky the next one is just coming out.
