From orphan at fourteen to immortal royalty at nineteen, how the heck did that happen?
Nineteen-year-old Lissa witnessed the brutal murder of her parents by blood-thirsty vampires at the tender age of fourteen. She would have suffered the same unpleasant fate had tall, dark, and mysterious stranger Max not intervened. Every night since Lissa, along with an elite group of fighters, trains and patrols the mostly abandoned streets around the city of Buffalo, NY. They quietly thwart the dastardly plans of rogue vampires and cursed shifters in an attempt to protect mankind.
Having been told that all shifters are evil, Lissa is taken by surprise when she learns that there are good ones in the world - the Guardians. And she's bonded with one of them, an ultra-rare occurrence amongst Guardians in recent years and unheard of between a Guardian and a mortal. When a typically fatal injury threatens to end her, her bond-mate throws caution to the wind and uses his own blood to save her. The consequences could be disastrous when Lissa wakes up to find she is no longer human, and not only a shifter herself but the shifter queen.
I'm a 30-something stay-at-home caretaker that loves to curl up with her cat and a great book. As a writer, I strive to tell compelling stories that readers will enjoy curling up with. When I'm not occupied with the myriad of tasks above, I'm an avid gamer and love all things crafty from crocheting to wood-burning and all things in between.
I was a little hesitant at the beginning of this one but truly pleased I stuck with it. The novel has a great strong, kickarse heroine together with her sexy bloke.
This really has a bit of a cliffhanger which I detest, although it could be worse. I'm now waiting for the next novel within about 6 months or the cliffhanger is moot.
Read the blurb and decided it was worth a try. Halfway through the book I had to go back and reread the blurb as nothing in the story had made any major progress whatsoever and I was confused if I was even reading the same book. Blurb says one thing, what actually happens in the book is seemingly something else.
I wasn't a fan of any of the lead characters. I rooted for Max as he honestly tried his best but nothing really went his way. He isn't perfect, but I don't see how the stalky alternative Josh is any better. Our lead heroine isn't exactly sane either, all it takes for her to fall in love is for a hot guy to show some interest in her. Can't say much about her personality other than I was quite bored with her.
There are vampires in the story but they don't feel significant at all. They are described to have inhuman speed yet there is no problem for humans to stake them if necessary. So much for their supposedly inhuman speed.
Worst part of the book is probably the following scene. I don't have the quote as I deleted the book asap, but it went along the lines with:
Max: You've lost a lot of blood. I will call a nurse. Lissa: It's fine, I just need some sleep. Max: Ok, no point arguing.
Because going to sleep after a huge blood loss is always a good idea, right? I'm not sure whether to blame the characters or the author.
I don't like being harsh, but this book wasn't that good. It certainly isn't something I would read again. The punctuation could have been better, and definitely needs to be edited in places. There were a few run-on sentences, and it makes a story hard to read. Punctuation and grammar are so relevant in authorship! Book needs to be perfected, and simply isn't good enough.
This part specifically is the wrong medical procedure: Max: You've lost a lot of blood. I will call a nurse. Lissa: It's fine, I just need some sleep. Max: Ok, no point arguing.
You don't go to sleep after losing blood. Needs more detail thereafter to enhance realism.
I don't normally like shifter novels that make wolves the bad guys and cats the good... I'm a dog person after all.... but I love this one. It shows a world that is corrupt with exception of a small bright light. Keep it shining your majesty!
