This is one of those books I wish had a kid. I struggled with word problems my whole life because I was taught how to do them, but not the concept behind them. If I had a student who struggled like I did, this is a book that I would send them home with this book. It covers word problems in areas such as logical reasoning, working backwards, estimation, graphing, equations and many more in such an easy to understand way. This is the kind of book that if I had when I growing up, it would have made me more of a math lover. Awesome read!!!!
I think that this book would be ideal for the first year teacher who is looking for a step by step way to teach math concepts OR as a student reference perhaps when learning test taking strategies. This book offers numerous work problems with step by step solutions for how to solve them. My only criticism of the book is that though it offers a lot of great tips for how to solve word problems I would have rather seen them solve the SAME problem using different strategies as opposed to a different problem for each strategy. I think that this would have allowed more flexibility for a child who may be struggling with one method and needs new options. Drawing a picture is not the only way to solve a comparison problem nor is it the only type of problem drawing a picture can be used for, so it would be good to see the ideas across multiple problems.
I would use this book as a hook for a lessom from grades 2-5 as a read aloud for a lesson plan about solving word problems. I would have like to have seen examples of fractions in the book, but I could use my own examples and still highlight the steps to solving word problems, including word problems with fractions.
