I wrote this book because it is the story I wished I’d had growing up. As a kid I didn’t read very much. I watched Star Trek and Quantum Leap. My literary conquests consisted of X-men comics, Bible stories and whatever I could find in an encyclopaedia – Greek and Aztec myths, dinosaurs, crazy animals and all wonders of the natural world. I then filled my notebooks with drawings of the fantastical characters and creatures I had synthesised from real life. It wasn’t until a friend lent me a copy of Terry Jones’ Nicobobinus that words became a powerful ally of images and I started creating stories (which often got me into trouble). I attended Yale University and studied graphic design for job security and then creative writing at Edinburgh University. Finally, after reading the works of favourite visual artists like Tony DiTerlizzi and D.M. Cornish, I realised that I too had a story to tell with words as well as pictures.
