About the author

Francis Henry Durbridge was an English playwright and author born in Hull. In 1938, he created the character Paul Temple for the BBC radio serial Send for Paul Temple.

A crime novelist and detective, the gentlemanly Temple solved numerous crimes with the help of Steve Trent, a Fleet Street journalist who later became his wife. The character proved enormously popular and appeared in 16 radio serials and later spawned a 64-part big-budget television series (1969-71) and radio productions, as well as a number of comic strips, four feature films and various foreign radio productions.

Francis Durbridge also had a successful career as a writer for the stage and screen. His most successful play, Suddenly at Home, ran in London’s West End for over a year.

NU 202: tutta la verità su Melissa

È sempre un piacere imbattersi in un giallo classico così interessante e avvincente, tanto che è davvero difficile staccarsi dalla lettura. E pensare che è stato scritto nel lontano 1967. Forse non dovrei meravigliarmi visto che è opera del noto autore radio-televisivo, di fama internazionale, FRANCIS DURBRIDGE e non è il suo primo giallo.
La storia è coinvolgente ed è un classico del giallo: una donna, MELISSA, viene trovata morta e i sospetti ricadono sul marito, Guy Foster. Lui è un aspirante scrittore e, come in ogni giallo che si rispetti, decide di iniziare un'indagine per proprio conto, convinto che la polizia sia ormai troppo prevenuta nei suoi confronti. Ed è così che inizia un'avvincente investigazione dilettantistica che va a scoprire i troppi segreti di una moglie tanto diversa da lui e le ambiguità dei cosiddetti amici. A complicare la situazione ci sono anche le cose che ignora di se stesso e della propria vita. In una rocambolesca serie di eventi e di scoperte, Francis Durbridge ci conduce verso una sconvolgente e inaspettata verità.

I saw the film adaptation of this book, which was very disappointing. This made me apprehensive about reading the book. I'm glad I did, as I found it a very good book in the Durbridge/Paul Temple standard

A short and tense mystery, well-written and with nice characters. Unfortunately it's brought down by its ending: it's too abrupt and too "easy" being achieved without much input from the protagonist.

Dit is een boek van twijfel. Twijfel of Guy Foster nu slachtoffer of moordenaar is. Twijfel wie dan de echte moordenaar is. Twijfel bij wie en wat Melissa werkelijk was. Twijfel of Guy zich uit de ogenschijnlijk waterdichte beschuldiging van moord op zijn vrouw zal kunnen werken en hoe hij zijn onschuld zal kunnen aantonen.
Het boek begint met een lange sfeerschepping en opbouwen van een achtergrond waartegen de moord gebeurt en hoe Guy in een uitzichtloze situatie komt, beschuldigd van de moord op zijn vrouw.
Dan een nog langere periode van het volgen van min of meer doodlopende sporen tot alles naar het einde toe in een stroomversnelling terecht komt.
Interessant is de evolutie van inspekteur Cameron van vijand tot medestander. Ietwat verwarrend is het echte einde waar de lezer zelf moet beslissen wie nu de dader was, niet zo erg moeilijk maar nooit expliciet door de schrijver vermeld. Dat lijkt wel een test of de lezer wel aandachtig genoeg was.
Durbridge hoeft niet meer voorgesteld te worden. Hij is een schrijver met wereldfaam en vooral bekend van de verhalen over Paul Vlaanderen en van zijn hoorspelen op de radio.
Dit is één van zijn andere boeken die met hetzelfde talent geschreven zijn, al zit hier veel meer psychische spanning in dan gebruikelijk en is tegelijkertijd de fysieke aktie en het directe levensgevaar een heel stuk minder prominent aanwezig.
Zoals gewoonlijk is het aantal medespelers en dus ook het aantal verdachten beperkt, wordt die kring nog verder beperkt door bijkomende moorden en ligt de focus op het speurwerk.

Un giallo piuttosto breve (basta un giorno per finirlo) e con una trama accattivante: la Melissa del titolo viene uccisa in circostanze poco chiare e il marito viene accusato. Scorrevole la scrittura, ma poco solido il plot: tanti spunti non sviluppati, ripetitive le visite degli "amici" intenti solo a coprirsi le spalle e soprattutto un finale assurdo! Il colpevole è Don o Felix? L'autore non lo svela. Bah.
Lettura da ombrellone e forse neanche quello.

Główny bohater jest idiotą, który po wielokroć popełnia ten sam błąd i wpada w tę samą pułapkę. No ale czego się spodziewać po gościu, który poślubił kompletnie do niego nie pasującą kobietę, bo była atrakcyjna fizycznie... Intryga też przekombinowana. Odradzam

Сюжет досить слабкий. Підозра падає одразу на двох друзів Гая. Проте в кінці книги повною мірою не розкриваються всі вчинки дійових персонажів. Книжку можна читати, проте від неї не варто очікувати логічної послідовності чи захоплюючої розв'язки.
